We had a few bumps over the past couple of weeks — some old stuff got tossed to make room for the new, and not everything went as planned. This update squashes a bunch of bugs and improves the ticketing section. You'll also need this version to buy tickets for the Christkindlemarket on the Bund.

We’ve rebuilt our login system for a more seamless and secure experience, including a quick and easy option to sign in without a password. However, during this update, WeChat login was temporarily affected. If you use WeChat to log in, please make sure to update to this version. You can now join a SmartShanghai WeChat group directly from our app! Just head to your MySmSh page and check out the new Subscriptions section. In that same section, you can now manage your subscriptions to SmartShanghai’s curated, spam-free newsletters. We’ve also redesigned the Events landing page, making it easier than ever to explore our extensive, curated events calendar. For venue listings, we now indicate if a venue is closed for holidays or special events—provided they inform us. Plus, we’ve squashed a bunch of bugs. Wait, 20 years in and we still got bugs? We're super excited to announce the latest version of the SmartShanghai.com App. It's bigger, better, more streamlined, nicer, snazzier, more user-friendly, and now, more than ever before, more social. Yes, more "social". What we mean by that is, now, with the new SmSh App, users are invited to contribute by submitting content like events listings and deals, share recommendations of favorite restaurants or bars, upload pictures and menus, upload Housing and Buy&Sell posts, report errors in our database, recommend services, and let us know about cool new stuff, among other things, right into the SmSh App. Basically, we're inviting you to interact with the SmartShanghai app, with the thinking that your own experience of Shanghai — your own favorite places to go, your own favorite things to do, and your own life out there in the city — is important, useful, and valuable. So we'd like to hear from you as much as you'd like over the platform. But yeah, of course, we'll give you free stuff if you do.

We've improved our search and made it easier to browse our directory and popular How-To articles. Just tap the search bar and suggestions will start showing up. It's now also easier to reach out to us, open your account page and scroll down to see how you can help us by providing feedback, reporting bugs and contributing to our app (yes we are looking for contributors). This is our biggest update… to date! Please update your SmSh app to this latest version. Older versions will stop working in the next few days. This is the first release of a series of updates that will be rolled out in the next few months leading up to our 20th anniversary in October, with the goal of making the SmartShanghai app more useful again, more social, more community driven, more fun to use, and, generally, more everything. For this version, we’ve rebuilt parts of the app from scratch, focusing on re-designing the landing page, and fixing some of the major issues with the current version. You can now submit events, housing and Buy & Sell listings directly in the app. Also, now, there are better ways of getting involved, by uploading pictures of your favorite venues and services, food pictures, deals, and more, more, more. No more manual App Updates: This feature is now a relic when we built the APP over 10 years ago when many users didn’t have fast internet access on their phones. NOW, the app always loads the most up to date info automatically. A NEW SEARCH THAT WILL BLOW YOUR MIND: SmartShanghai’s search has been entirely re-vamped. It’s smarter and now shows more results for articles, events and venues. You can even now find 3-letter venues like KIN and KOR, and BAR (ROUGE cause ur too lazy to type the whole thing out). MUCH FASTER LOADING: We’ve bled to make our APP way more speed optimized. SHARING ON WECHAT FIXED! That annoying error message is no more. Now you can share listings from the SmSh app to your friends; lovers, and enemies on WeChat. Yea! Want to be the most helpful person to all the humans in your life? We've re-designed our APP homepage to show our full coverage of recently opened venues in Shanghai. There are also a larger variety of events visible, including art shows, community and family events, as well as deals. We’ve also fixed a bug that made the app use your location more than necessary

- Added related articles, events, and party galleries to venue listings - Fixed the "Show Venues Nearby" button in venue listings - Fixed various usability issues and bugs

Added favorite venues lists feature as available on the site. Added notifications for eg. new private messages, which greatly helps you when looking to rent, or get rid of, an apartment, or when you're selling something in Buy & Sell.

Some users who are using a non-default browser on their phone were having difficulties accessing articles through the app; this has now been fixed. We also made some UI improvements in the housing- and events sections.

We fixed some minor issues related to the rendering of certain housing listings.

Based on feedback we’ve improved the housing and commercial properties sections to make it easier to find listings and contact users, agencies and property owners. We’ve also fixed various minor bugs and made the experience on iOS 14 even better.

A recent API change had adverse effects on some pages in our app. We’ve now fixed this, along with other performance and quality-of-life improvements. Also, on certain event and venue listings you will now more easily be able to see related shows and deals, and for certain dining events you will be able to preview the menu on your phone.

Update! In our neverending quest to make things better and faster, we have made some improvements to our app. We reduced the open time for new users by cacheing more content. For pages in the app that rely on location, it’s now more transparent when waiting for the phone to pinpoint the location. Onwards and upwards.

Our venue listings will now show public wifi names- and passwords when available. We've also made it more clear how to submit housing- and job listings.

Many of you have asked for better WeChat sharing. We hear you! Sharing a venue listing from the app with a WeChat friend will now share our brand new WeChat mini program instead, allowing your friend to view the venue listing without leaving WeChat. We also received a lot of feedback from users who found communicating with people who posted housing or buy & sell listings was a bit tedious, which is why we have fully integrated SmartShanghai private messaging into the app; start conversations on the website and continue them on your phone!

Thanks to a lot of great feedback, we have now improved our housing and venue filters to be able to search by metro station. We have also further improved our venue search.

Thanks to everyone who has gotten in touch with us regarding WeChat sharing issues. Sharing content with your friends on WeChat should now work as expected. We have also taken complaints from users about the offline mode popup, and have made some changes to the way the app starts up. You should now have smoother sailing both on- and offline.
