Tonaut 2.0 is a free update, and the biggest one yet. - Tonaut as an AUv3 plug-in. Play Tonaut inside AUM, Loopy Pro, GarageBand and other AUv3 hosts, alongside your other apps. A big window shows the full Tonaut panel; a small one shows a compact card with all eight lanes, the tape, a keyboard and the tempo. On iPhone the full panel fits the smaller windows hosts give a plug-in. Load several copies, follow the host's tempo and transport, and projects you save in the plug-in open in the app, and the other way around. - Tonaut FX. A second plug-in, "Coast Creative: Tonaut FX", for effect slots in AUM, Loopy Pro and other hosts: the channel's audio passes through, and REC records it onto Tonaut's tape. - Song Mode. Build a song from scenes. Each of the 16 scenes picks a pattern for every lane, so lane 1 can play pattern 1 while lane 2 plays pattern 3, and remembers which lanes are muted. Put scenes in order with repeats, end on LOOP or STOP, and press PLAY. Tap a scene while playing to switch at the end of the current one. Record the whole song to tape, or export it as a MIDI file. Press SEQ again for SONG, and again for PERFORM. - MIDI learn. In Settings › MIDI, tap LEARN, touch a slider, turn a knob on your controller, and it's mapped. Choose PICKUP or JUMP, see every mapping in one list, and save a set as the default for new projects. Lane levels and mutes can be learned too. With no setup at all, CC 70 to 73 move the four sliders on screen. It works inside the plug-in too, alongside the host's automation. - iPad: taller faders on MIX and PERFORM, which take a finger anywhere in their column. - PERFORM: the lane names under the faders are no longer cut off, and the headers always name the lanes on screen. - Tonaut keeps its usual size at any Display Zoom setting. - A new install opens on the demo song with a line that says how to hear it.

- A new look and a new icon. TN-Dark is now the default look on a new install, and TN, a deep-black icon, is the new app icon. The looks have new names: TN-Dark, TN-Light, TN-XY, TN-Signal, OG-Dark and OG-Light. AUTO now switches between TN-Light and TN-Dark with your phone. The earlier icons are still in Settings as TN-Color and TN-Wave. - A demo song. A new install opens it on first launch, and everyone finds it in PROJECTS with a DEMO tag. Press PLAY on SEQ to hear it, then take it apart. The demo always stays as it shipped; SAVE keeps your version as a copy. - Drum keys are now numbered left to right: pad 1 on the first key, pad 2 on the black key after it, and so on up to 24, on screen and from a MIDI keyboard. Every pad still sounds on the same key, so your songs play as before. The old layout is one tap away in Settings as ROWS. - KILL ALL: press STOP when everything is already stopped, or SHIFT + STOP at any time, to silence every sound and every reverb and delay tail at once. - CHOP: cut a loop into 8, 16 or 24 slices, or let HITS cut it at the drum hits. - Pad LINK: a pad can also play a second pad, to layer a kick with a clap. Works on sampled kits, KNOCK and CINDER. - CLIP: a new soft-clipper effect for any effect slot and the master, for loud mixes that stay clean. - SAMPLES: on a drum lane, tap a key to pick the pad you load onto. - Scope style in Settings: line or pixels, in any look. - iPad: the Settings list scrolls and has roomier rows. - Lists sort in true number order, so Project 10 comes after Project 9. - SHIFT hints: the first few times you open each screen, a line shows what SHIFT adds there. - HELP now starts with a line about the screen you're on. On iPhone, hold HELP / SETTINGS to open Settings. - A key that makes no sound now says why, for example when its lane is muted or a level is at zero. - UNDO on the SHIFT keyboard now undoes your SEQ edits. - Fixed: muting a lane while recording the sequencer to tape cut that track short. The tape now records the sound ringing out, just as you hear it. - Fixed: a shared M4A on iOS 17 was a little short. - Fixed: the X/Y key could draw at the wrong size after switching looks.

- PHRASE: a phrase sequencer in the ARP. Hold SHIFT and play to enter up to 999 steps, chords included. Add rests and long notes, then press any key to play the phrase from that key. Play it forward, backward or in random order, or step through it one key at a time. - RHYTHM: give any arpeggio a pattern of dots and dashes and shift it with ROTATE. A dash can pause the arpeggio or skip a note. - TRIGGER and ADD: add octaves or other notes to each note of an arpeggio, or restart it on every beat. - The octave keys now move a playing arpeggio or phrase right away. - Choose the app icon in Settings: the reels, or the original wave stack. - MIDI file import: bring a .mid from Files onto your lanes, or send one to Tonaut. Pick which track plays on which lane, keep your tempo or use the file's, and play it on SEQ. Drums land on the pads, and chords and velocity come with them. One UNDO takes it all back. - Step painting on SEQ: play a key, pad or chord, then hold SHIFT and tap steps to paint it in. Tap a step again to take it off. - PERFORMANCE LIGHT now lightens the reverb too, for older iPads. - Older iPads with 2 GB of memory are better protected from running out of memory. - SAMPLES: LOAD into the SAMPLER now loads dry, with no effects carried over from the last sound. CHOP is on every lane, so a break can become a sliced kit from any lane. - PATCHES and KITS: ENGINE DEFAULT is now at the top of the list. - iPhone Duo: split screen goes straight to its layout again, as in 1.5.

- CHOP: in SAMPLES on a drum lane, put the cursor on a loop or break and press CHOP. It becomes a new kit, sliced across all 24 pads. - Longer samples: a kit or a SAMPLER sound now holds up to 60 seconds (it was 20), so a whole drum break or a long loop fits. The oldest iPads, with the A10 chip, keep 20 seconds. - Choke groups: every pad of every kit can join one of four groups. A hit cuts the other pads ringing in its group, so an open hi-hat stops when the closed one plays. - Kits keep their pads in order: after you load a file onto any pad, the waveform reads pad 1 to pad 24 from left to right. Every pad sounds exactly as before. - Lifting a tape track into a kit now takes its first 60 seconds instead of refusing a longer track. - iPhone Duo: the outer screen is always landscape, even after folding the phone while Tonaut stood upright. - The app icon has a little more room around it. - Sharing: a song with a sample longer than 20 seconds needs Tonaut 1.5.1 or later to open.

- Tonaut now runs on iOS and iPadOS 17: iPhone XS, XR and newer; iPad (6th generation), iPad mini (5th generation), iPad Air (3rd generation), every iPad Pro from 2017, and newer. - A new install opens in TN-SIGNAL, now first in Settings. Already using Tonaut? Your look stays as it is. - Settings, AUDIO, Performance: AUTO, FULL or LIGHT. LIGHT eases an older chip with a larger audio buffer, fewer notes at once and calmer 30 fps screens. AUTO turns it on for the iPads with the A10 chip. - Recording into SEQ: tap the same note twice quickly and the second now goes on the next step instead of stacking on the same one. - Display Zoom: an iPhone set to Larger Text now shows the full instrument at its usual size instead of saying the screen is too small. - The iPhone SE's "screen too small" message now says how to ask Apple for a refund.

- Tonaut now runs on iOS and iPadOS 18: iPhone XS, XR and newer, iPad (8th generation), iPad mini (5th generation), iPad Air (3rd generation), every iPad Pro from 2018, and newer. - SAMPLES: link your sample folders once, tap a file to hear it, and LOAD it onto a pad or into the sampler. IMP opens it. - Drag audio files in from other apps onto a drum pad or a SAMPLER lane. - A new look, TN-SIGNAL: midnight blue, cyan and coral, on iPhone, iPad and iPhone Duo. - iPad: the 10.2-inch iPad, iPad Air (3rd generation) and iPad mini (5th generation) now get the full iPad layout. Settings has a new Layout choice: AUTO picks it by your iPad's model, even with Display Zoom set to More Space, or choose 11-INCH or 13-INCH. - iPhone Duo: side by side with another app, Tonaut uses the upright layout with two big lanes (hold a lane for four), and goes straight to it with no wide panel first. Upright and side by side, TAPE shows its reels big and centred. Open, the reels sit clear of the edge, and MIX's balance sliders fit with six or eight lanes. - MIDI in BY CHANNEL: the same note on two channels now plays on both lanes. - On the oldest devices Tonaut uses a larger audio buffer, and if a song is too heavy for the device it says so.

- iPhone Duo: open and held upright, or side by side with another app, Tonaut now uses the half-folded layout, screens above and keys below, instead of a small landscape panel. Turning the phone always redraws the panel. - REVERB has longer, smoother tails that keep moving, and big rooms darken as they fade. Sounds and songs that use it will sound a little different. - EQ shows frequencies in Hz and gains in dB, draws the real curve, and has a new MID Q control for the width of the middle band. - REC shows only on pages where it records; elsewhere PLAY takes its space. While the tape or a pattern is set to record, every page's header says so. - On iPad, the TN-1, TN-1 Dark and TN-XY looks have deeper keys, buttons and lane pills, and a recessed slider deck. - TN-XY has new black reels with a defined rim. - Fixed: SLOPE's classic view draws the wave you hear.

A free update for the iPhone Duo. - Folded, the outer screen has its own layout across its full width: the lanes, the two screens, the four sliders, one row of nine keys and a one-octave keyboard, its black keys between the white ones. Swipe the four right-hand keys to reach SYNTH, DRUM, TAPE, SEQ and ARP. - Hold SHIFT for the quick slots, UNDO and DIE, and OCT- and OCT+ on the two end keys. DRUM shows 12 pads at a time; SHIFT + OCT+ shows pads 13 to 24. - Half folded like a small laptop, the screens and sliders sit above the fold, and big buttons and a tall-keyed keyboard below it. - Fully open, you get the iPhone layout with its two-octave keyboard, bigger, with more on screen at once: all eight lanes, all eight sliders of a page, and PATCH, KITS, PROJ, EDIT, MIX, UNDO, DIE and HELP always there. - Fold and unfold while you play or record. The music doesn't stop. Nothing changes on other iPhones or on iPad.

A free update that makes Settings and every list work the way the rest of your phone does. - Lists scroll naturally: slide a finger up and the list moves up with it. Let go and it glides to a stop on a row, which becomes the selected one. PATCHES and KITS glide a little shorter, so they're easy to stop where you want. - A little more space between rows, so your finger lands on the one you mean. The favorite stars are easier to tap. - Settings: tap a value to set it, and tap a row to select it. - Settings > INFO has a QUICK START row. Tap OPEN to read the Quick Start guide on tonaut.app. - Press any other key and Settings closes, and that key does its job. No need to close Settings first.

A free update with new looks for the iPad and a clearer SHIFT on the iPhone. - iPhone: tap SHIFT and a strip of buttons opens to the right of the tempo key: the page's own SHIFT jobs, then PATCH, KITS, PROJ, EDIT, MIX and HELP / SETTINGS. A button that's on fills in, and one that can't act tells you why. HELP now lives here, as HELP / SETTINGS, instead of on the keyboard. - iPad: the TN-1, TN-1 Dark and TN-XY housings, with keys made for the iPad. Pick one in Settings > THEME. - iPad: reel-to-reel TAPE. The reels turn and the tape winds from one to the other. Tap the window to switch to the tape running past the head. - iPad: CHORD MODE on SYNTH, with CHORD, KEY, STRUM and BASS beside the sliders. - iPad: a SETTINGS key next to HELP. Quick slots read SLOT 01 to SLOT 08. - KEY now steps to the next key and keeps the scale, on iPhone and iPad. - First-launch tips are easier to see, with clear NEXT and SKIP buttons. - On the iPhone, the TAPE reels have more room around them.

Easier to get started. - Tap the lit sound name at the top to browse more sounds. Tap it again to go back. - On DRUM, tap a pad on the screen to play it. Hold SHIFT and tap to mute it. - Double-tap a slider to put it back where the sound started, as it was loaded or last saved. The screen says what it went back to. - A few short tips on first launch show you around. See them again any time: open Settings, press INFO, then TIPS. - Controls you can't hear yet are drawn off and tell you why when tapped. For example, oscillator B's controls while B LEVEL is at 0. - On DRUM, a slider change plays the pad you're editing, so you hear it even when nothing else is playing. - New tape reels on the TAPE page, with the tape winding from one to the other as it plays. - HOLD in the sequencer now reaches 64 steps, a whole pattern: 1 to 16 steps, then 2, 3 or 4 bars. - Fixed: crackles and pops on a quiet lane set to CRUSH's BROKEN, such as Gate Slices.

CHORD PAD: seven chords from your key on seven keys, and a stick that turns each one into a 7th, 9th, sus, dim and more as you play. SIXTEEN EFFECTS, eight of them new: tape echo, a reverb with tails up to a minute, distortion, filter, pump, swirl, lo-fi and tremolo. OVER 500 SOUNDS, a 3D screen for every engine, and on iPhone three new housings with an LED in every key. CHORD PAD On a synth lane, hold SHIFT and tap CHORD until it reads PAD. The seven keys play the chords of your key and scale, and the stick changes them: 7, 9, sus4, sus2, dom7, dim, add9 or major to minor. STRUM rolls each chord in time and BASS adds the root below. Play it from a MIDI keyboard too: the white keys pick the chord, the pitch bender and mod wheel move the stick. The chords play into the arpeggiator, the sequencer and MIDI out. NEW EFFECTS Every sound still has four effect slots, and MIX has a master effect. Each now chooses from sixteen types: • ECHO: a tape echo in time with the tempo, each repeat darker than the last • SPACE: a reverb with tails from one second to a minute, and a shimmer an octave up • DIST: distortion from crunch to fuzz • FILTER: a low, high or band filter that moves in time with the tempo or with how hard you play • PUMP: the sidechain duck, in time with the tempo • SWIRL: a phaser and a flanger in one • LO-FI: crackle, hiss, wobble and an old-radio tone • TREMOLO: the level or the pan moving in time with the tempo SOUNDS • Over 500 sounds, including 147 sampled instruments and 40 more: electric pianos, hard basses, big pads and echo plucks, listed under NEW in the browser • Every synth engine has a 3D screen that moves with your playing, and KNOCK and CINDER kits play on 3D pads and a 3D drum kit. Tap the screen for the classic view • Each sound opens in its own range, so basses start low • A filter on the SAMPLER • Rename your own sounds, tag them by type, and choose SAVE or SAVE AS FIVE HOUSINGS ON IPHONE TN-1, TN-1 Dark and TN-XY join Light and Dark (Settings, THEME, Housing). In all three, every key has an LED that lights while its note plays. iPad has Light and Dark. KEYS AND CHORDS • Pick a key and scale and the keys in it light up. LOCK keeps every note in key • CHORDS plays a whole chord from one key, and LEARN keeps a chord shape of your own • Each lane can have its own key SEQUENCER, MIX AND TAPE • STEP REC: each note or chord you play fills a step and moves on, with REST and TIE, from the screen, the chord pad, the drum pads or a MIDI keyboard • Move a pattern up or down an octave, copy a pattern to another lane, and see which bar is playing • An EQ on every lane • Recording every lane to tape keeps your mix balance SHARE AND MIDI • Share a loop from the tape as a vertical video or as audio, ready to post • Export MIDI files of every lane • Your MIDI keyboard can play the selected lane, or each lane can listen on its own channel • Enter sequencer steps from a MIDI keyboard EASIER TO USE PLAY shows whether it starts the sequencer or the tape. REC blinks while it records. The page keys look different from the mode keys. On the FX page, tap an effect's name to change it. FIXES No crackle on the first play, smoother audio, and many smaller fixes. A song that uses the new effects, a lane EQ, LOCK or CHORDS asks a friend still on 1.0 to update before it opens.
