BackendStudio reads your database's schema and immediately serves a REST API for it — from your own Mac, with no code to write and nothing to deploy. Point it at PostgreSQL, MySQL, or a SQLite file, press Start, and every table and view has an endpoint.
WHAT YOU GET
• A REST endpoint for every table and view. Filter on any column, sort, paginate, or fetch a single row by primary key.
• An OpenAPI 3 document and a Swagger page, generated from the same schema that serves the data — so the docs cannot drift from the API.
• Types that survive the trip. An integer arrives as a number, a NUMERIC keeps its decimal places, and SQL NULL comes back as null instead of an empty string.
• A request log showing method, path, status code, and duration, with a p95 that appears only once there is data behind it.
TRY IT WITHOUT A DATABASE
A read-only sample database is built in, so you can see the whole thing work before connecting anything of your own: open "Sample API (read-only)", press Start, and you have a live REST API with OpenAPI docs. It cannot be written to, so nothing you do while exploring can break it.
SAFE BY DEFAULT
Handing out a database is easy to get wrong, so the defaults are the cautious ones:
• A fresh connection is read-only. Write access is granted one table at a time, and granting one says nothing about the others.
• The API never advertises a write method you have not enabled.
• A PATCH or DELETE with no filter is refused rather than applied to every row.
• Switching databases clears every grant you made.
• No endpoint accepts SQL. Table and column names in a request are checked against the schema read from your database, and every value travels as a bound parameter.
• Turning on authentication without setting a key refuses requests instead of waving them through.
• CORS answers only the origins you list. API keys are compared in constant time.
• With SQLite, the file itself is opened read-only until you grant a table.
YOUR DATA STAYS YOURS
There is no account to create and no cloud component. BackendStudio connects straight from your Mac to your database and serves requests from that same machine. There is no analytics SDK in the app — the privacy manifest declares zero data collection and zero tracking. Credentials live in the macOS Keychain. If you connect through an SSH tunnel, the host key is pinned: a key that does not match the one you trusted aborts the connection instead of asking you to click through.
WHAT IT IS GOOD FOR
Prototyping against real data before the real API exists. Internal tools. Demos. Giving a script or a spreadsheet read access without writing glue code. Handing a frontend developer a URL instead of a backend.
WHAT IT IS NOT
It is not a hosting product. The server runs while the app runs, on your Mac — there is no cluster, no failover, and no uptime guarantee. Keep it on networks you trust.
Redis and MongoDB connections can be browsed in the app, but are deliberately not served over HTTP: without a fixed schema there are no table and column names to validate a request against, and that validation is what makes the rest of this safe.
Requires macOS 14 or later.
A 7-day free trial is included, with nothing held back. After it ends the app still opens and your connections are still there — you can browse schemas and see the endpoints and OpenAPI document that would be generated — but serving requires a subscription: $5.99 a month or $47.99 a year. There is also a one-time purchase if you would rather not subscribe. The safety settings are never paywalled.
