I’ve tried learning Japanese for a long time, I first tried Duolingo but spent hours a day for a month straight and realized I hadn’t learned a single thing by the end of it, hadn’t even fully learned katakana or hiragana!!!A good while later I tried an online guide from Tofugo for katakana and hiragana, and learned them both in about two days. But kanji was rather intimidating so that’s where I dropped off, I’ve quit learning Japanese due to kanji quite a few times now.However with Wagotabi I’ve learned 60 kanji in just under a week playing an hour a day, and a 100+ words and many useful sentences. I’m in awe at how efficient this game is at teaching you Japanese.You get some kanji and new words and phrases dumped in your lap and think how am I gonna remember all of these? I’m probably gonna forget them within an hour, but when you do your reviews “smart lessons” some hours later or even the next day, you realize they actually stuck, you can both remember what they look like, how they’re written and pronounced, as well as what they mean.Learning katakana and hiragana before starting was probably beneficial, but by no means necessary, though you will progress a bit slower if you don’t know these two first. I used Tofugo’s free guides for katakana and hiragana, along with their quiz which are both great and very efficient. Shouldn’t take more than a few days to get familiar with both writing systems. You can then focus on kanji and the words and sentences in Wagotabi rather than learning three writing systems simultaneously which I imagine could be a bit overwhelming.This game shows you that you’re more capable of learning Japanese, and especially kanji than you think, and it’s really not that intimidating at all, especially when gamified like this. In fact it’s rather fun to learn and use the new kanji, words and sentences you are taught! The story is also engaging and well written, the lessons and practicals are very well integrated in the gameplay loop.10/10 game well worth the money. If you’re a bit unsure about spending money on a game, give the free demo a try at least. You’ll undoubtedly be convinced that it’s worth the small chunk of change they charge for this game.
