Description

Seamless offline 1:50k topographic and satellite map of the South Island. Includes full navigation functions as well as DOC huts, tracks, hunting areas and access points.

This app provides complete offline topographic map coverage of the South Island of New Zealand from the LINZ Topo50 1:50k scale series. The maps are all contained in the (large) install file so there is no additional need for downloads, no need for phone or wifi signal, no slow server issues, no account signups, no missing tiles, and no additional map fees. Just install for seamless off-line zooming and panning across the whole island down to 1:50,000 scale.

A modest resolution satellite map for the island is included. Toggle easily between satellite and topographic maps with the on-screen button.

The app includes DOC open and restricted hunting permit boundaries as overlays that can be switched on or off.

A full suite of navigation functions includes current location marking (GPS), compass orientation, distance to map locations, track recording and graphing, route creation and following, import/export of gpx and kml files, and a search function for named places on the map. Add and edit your own locations and routes. Intuitive simple interface, with one-touch access to all functions.

The app includes NZ TOPO250 series images at lower zoom levels for easier navigation.

Perfect for outback use out of cell phone range. GPS and maps function fully without phone coverage. No need to cache files in advance either as they are all fully installed with the app. Popular with trampers, hikers, runners, bikers, SARs, hunters, boaters, as well as professional survey applications.

Note that continuous use of GPS will run down the battery faster than when not using the GPS. The NZTopo50 app gives you full control over when GPS is used. The map can be used without GPS, intermittently with GPS for spot checking of location, continuously for logging while the app is open, or for continuous background logging when the phone is off.

DOC hunting block names

Great app, I’m using a IPhone and after enabling the DOC hunting area layer on to this I cannot see what the block is named. A friend of mine has a Samsung and the same app and it shows up on his phone. Please can this feature be added to the Apple app?

Developer Response ,

Edit: Block names have been added to the current version the same as the Android version of the app. Regards.

New update difficulties

This is a great app. But some features in the update make it more difficult to use. The new marker discs which replace the flags obscure the small features which make route planning or even micro navigation to reach that specific location more difficult. The grid reference feature requires you move the curser to read the location data. Something which makes it extremely difficult to find specific locations and note them down. It still also gives the grid reference backwards which may cause some real user problems. The distance and bearing feature obscures the possible direction of travel and makes it challenging to read the fine detail of the map around where you are. The improved map detail is mean though.

Developer Response ,

Thanks for the feedback. I'll be adding controls for the icon size as they are probably a bit large at the moment, and will add the skinny flag icon option back in - a few people seem to miss this. I'll add an option to keep the grid reference displayed permanently as well - although you can currently hold you finger on it to keep it displayed. The distance display does indeed occupy some of the central screen area but note that it can be turned off from the settings page. You are correct about the convention to report eastings first - I'll swap them around. Regards.

Best topo app in my opinion

Having been unimpressed with other topo apps I'd used, and wanting full offline storage, I bought this app a couple of years ago. Very happy with it! No issues, fast, easy to use, all the features you actually need. Recent update with hunting boundaries is a big bonus for me too! Worked well even on an older device (4S)
