Sable: Pixel • Draw • Vector
Pixel & vector drawing studio
Free · In-App Purchases · Designed for iPad. Not verified for macOS.
Draw in pixels and vectors — on the same layer.
Sable is a professional drawing studio for iPad that erases the line between painting and vector art. Lay down a textured, pressure-sensitive brush stroke, then drop an editable vector shape right next to it — on the very same layer. No switching apps. No flattening. No compromise.
Built for Apple Pencil on a Metal canvas tuned to stay glued to the nib: every stroke lands exactly where you expect, the instant you make it.
WHY SABLE
• Pixel and vector on one canvas — freehand painting and precise shapes, together
• Weave shapes through and around each other — a signature Sable move
• Vectors stay razor-sharp at any zoom, from 100% to 5000% — never a jagged edge
• A deep, organic brush engine with real pressure, tilt, and grain
DRAW
• Expressive pixel brushes with a natural, hand-made feel
• A full vector pen with node editing, plus freehand Draw and Smooth modes
• ShapeSnap — hold at the end of a stroke to snap a perfect line, arc, or shape
• Symmetry, perspective, grid, and isometric guides

• Gradients, colour drop, alpha lock, and clipping masks
SHAPE & TRANSFORM
• Melt — push, twirl, pinch, and expand with your finger

EFFECTS
• Blur, sharpen, colour grades, curves and more — live and non-destructive
• Change or remove any effect anytime; your pixels and paths stay untouched

• Hybrid layers, folders, masks, clipping, blend modes, and opacity
EXPORT & SYNC

A cleaner, calmer Sable — and two new ways to add texture.
• Paint an effect on: pick any effect, choose Paint it on, and brush it only where you want it.
• New Texture effect with fabric and material looks — denim, corduroy, knit, leather, burlap, felt, wood and brushed metal — with a live preview in your colour.
• Brush and Pen Studio laid out properly in landscape, with a bigger, squarer preview.
• Every card, panel and menu tidied: clearer layers options, calmer colour panel, tidier effects, guides and settings.
• Smoother tool previews and a side toolbar that always stays centred.
• Fixes and polish throughout.

Paint that behaves like real paint.
• Loaded brushes run out along a long stroke and carry colour as you drag through wet paint.
• Thin paint catches the canvas weave; thick paint covers it.
• Watercolour comes alive: washes spread and dry with soft, pooled edges, and a colour dropped into a still-wet wash bleeds into it.
• New Kneaded eraser: lifts pencil and charcoal gently, letting the paper grain come back through.
• Dual-loaded brushes: put a second colour on the bristles (Brush Studio › Colour › Second colour).
• Brushes, pens and effects are sorted into clearer groups.
• Fixes and polish throughout.

Pencils, paint and the palette knife, rebuilt to feel like the real thing:
• Pencils now get darker as you scribble over the same spot, without lifting, just like graphite on paper, and keep a crisp, toothy edge.
• Charcoal, Conté and pastels build up as you work them, keep their chalky texture, and break into paper specks on a light touch.
• Wet paint stays wet: oils blend into fresh paint, not into paint that has dried.
• Thick paint catches the light on its ridges and keeps its colour in shadow.
• Flat brushes paint their full width, and the palette knife lays a clean, hard-edged band, even round big curves.
• Round Paint, Hard Airbrush and Neon keep firm edges and build up as you go over them.
• Many brushes refined: richer Ink Wash, crisper Speckle, wispier clouds, grass that grows out of the ground, an even Wet Wash.
• A roomier New Canvas window with a bigger preview.
1.1.33 10 Oct
A smudge that blends like real paint, and a cleaner app all round:
• New Smudge: your finger now carries the paint. Drag black into yellow and it fades smoothly through olive into yellow; blue through yellow turns green.
• Smudging charcoal, pastel and pencil keeps the paper grain, and a light touch keeps more of it.
• Smudging over bristle strokes no longer leaves white streaks.
• Wet paint: black mixed into yellow now gives a dark mustard instead of grey.
• Vector lines with flat or square ends no longer lose part of the stroke on curves.
• Every menu, empty screen, loading spinner, message and badge now looks and behaves the same everywhere.
• Clearer text and colours in every theme, bigger tap areas, and on/off ticks on layer options.
• Esc closes windows and menus, Return confirms, and buttons highlight under a trackpad pointer.
• Better VoiceOver support for the colour wheel, curves and gradients.

Brushes that feel like real paint and pencil:
• NEW bristle brushes: oil brushes now paint with real separate hairs — crisp streaks along the stroke, a lighter touch lifts the outer hairs, and a long stroke runs dry into scratchy dry-brush marks.
• Each hair carries the colour it touches: drag yellow half over red and you get orange streaks, like a real loaded brush.
• Flat brushes end square, Fan and Bristle Rake are real sparse hairs, Gouache has faint brush marks.
• Pencils, charcoal and pastels: crisp edges that break up with the paper and real tooth texture.
• Inks, markers and leaf/flower brushes stay crisp even at huge sizes.
• Clouds now look like real clouds — dab them in. Grass grows the right way up.
• Wet paint mixes like paint (yellow through wet red makes orange) and the Palette Knife keeps clean colour.
• Watercolour dries with a darker rim; Impasto lays dense paint and erases cleanly.
• A cleaner, more consistent layout everywhere — panels, menus, bars and buttons now match, with related tools grouped together.
• Fixed: a filled shape's colour could drift off its outline while dragging.
• A custom background colour code now always sticks.
1.1.31 6 Oct
A big care-and-polish update — every tool in Sable was checked, one by one:
• Thick vector strokes now flatten to a smooth shape, and the vector editor and pen are more precise.
• Apple Pencil: resting your hand on the screen no longer interrupts or cancels a stroke.
• Crop and Resize keep Paint Inside, live fills and editable shapes exactly in place.
• Time-lapse GIFs play at the speed you choose, even on long drawings.
• iCloud: changes made while sync was off now catch up, and drawings stay with the right Apple ID.
• Colours, palettes, layers, effects, guides and the studios: many small fixes.
• Clear messages instead of silent failures when a duplicate, import or export can't finish.
• Large canvases warn you before running out of memory, so your work stays safe.
1.1.30 5 Oct
A cleaner, calmer Sable — everything lines up, reads clearly and feels the same everywhere:
• A new blank canvas opens ready to draw, with the Brush picked.
• A big tidy-up across the whole app: labels, icons, menus and panels now line up and match, in Light, Medium and Dark.
• Easier to read in Light and Dark — clearer text, visible slider knobs, readable buttons on every accent colour.
• Menus open right where you tapped, and settings and studio tabs always start at the top.
• Apple Pencil: double-tap respects your eraser choice, squeeze opens and closes colours, and the hover ring shows the real size in Liquify.
• Your gallery keeps an up-to-date picture of every drawing, even if Sable closes unexpectedly.
• Better VoiceOver support and easier-to-tap small buttons.
1.1.29 3 Oct
Smoother on big drawings, and lots of little things that now just work:
• Big drawings: saving is lighter and faster, so large canvases with lots of layers stay steady.
• Fill: filling open background is much quicker.
• Symmetry: a simpler panel — pick a picture, flip one switch, done.
• Layers: dragging a layer to the top or bottom of a long list scrolls all the way, and names no longer get cut off in folders.
• Brushes draw exactly as wide as their size.
• Masks move with your art when you move or liquify it, and shading clipped to a shape moves with the shape.
• A hidden layer won't take paint you can't see — show it to draw on it.
• The eyedropper picks the exact colour you tap, and time-lapses end on your finished drawing.
1.1.28 2 Oct
More precise, everyday behaviour across Sable. Same look, everything works the way you'd expect:
• Text: Return now starts a new line. Centred and right-aligned text stays put as you type, and you can drag text by its letters to move it.
• Gradients: a gradient turns with its shape when you rotate it, and Canvas › Rotate keeps gradients and shapes lined up.
• Clipping & Masks: shading clipped to a layer now hides wherever that layer is masked away.
• Brush: very thin brushes draw a smooth, unbroken line.
• Pen: a quick tap places a clean corner point every time.
1.1.27 2 Oct
A deep polish of how every core tool behaves. Same look, everything works more precisely:
• Select & Transform: shapes stay glued under your pencil, small nudges move, resize handles stay on your finger, and moved pixels stay perfectly sharp.
• Fill: vector fills that meet the edge of the page now close exactly into the corners.
• Layers: Merge, Flatten and Ungroup keep your picture exactly as it looks — faded folders, clipped layers and line art under paint included.
• Undo: every step undoes and redoes exactly, including merges and canvas resizes.
• Export: 2× PNG and JPEG exports redraw your vector lines crisp at double size.
• Trim: tapping an arc of a circle or shape trims the whole arc, at any zoom.
• Eraser and Weave: more precise erasing, and woven over/under survives your edits.
1.1.26 1 Oct
Everything, in step.
• Every bar, panel and sheet now uses the same buttons, headers and dividers, so the whole app feels like one piece
• Done and Cancel sit in the same place on every tool bar
• Menus separate delete from the rest with a clear line
• Guide presets match the Looks chips, with an easy delete
• Timelapse, Export and New Drawing share one set of controls
• Folders of vector layers now show their artwork in the thumbnail
1.1.25 29 Sept
Brushes and pens, refined.
• Brush and Pen Studio: every setting has a plain-English tip, pick your test stroke, and hold to compare against where you started
• Sliders respond evenly across the whole range: size, width, tooth and grain
• Silkier strokes: the vector pen's line holds still as you draw and ends exactly where you lift; the pixel brush feels the same at any zoom
• Very light, soft brushes now build up smoothly with no banding
• Home: cleaner cards and a new Sort menu
• Layer rows always show opacity clearly
• Crisper shadows on menus and buttons
1.1.24 28 Sept
Smoother, softer, calmer.
• Panning, zooming and rotating now run at up to 120 fps, and a flick glides naturally out of your finger
• Opening drawings, autosave, photo import and the Brush and Pen Studio test pads no longer stutter while you work
• Panels, menus and popups all open and close with the same soft motion
• Refreshed themes: Light, a true mid-grey Medium and a softer charcoal Dark
• Rounder corners, a gentle press response on buttons and consistent haptics throughout
• Dozens of small layout refinements so every screen feels like one app
1.1.23 27 Sept
Group transforms feel better. Drag a corner of a group and it now resizes evenly, keeping its shape, and any effects on it scale right along with it. Want to distort instead? Switch it on from the group bar.
Plus a full look-and-feel pass: a cleaner, consistent type scale across every panel, one shared studio for brushes and pens, and matching Done and Cancel buttons everywhere.
1.1.22 25 Sept
Auto-shape now works with every brush. Sketch a rough circle, rectangle, line or arc, hold for a moment, and it snaps crisp — and a roughly straight stroke now locks properly straight, whether you're drawing in pixels or vectors.
Plus a round of polish: smoother panel and banner transitions, a more consistent vector selection bar, and a clearer cue when you hold to sample a colour.
1.1.21 24 Sept
Add an arrowhead, dot, or bar to either end of a vector stroke — each end on its own. The vector Line-ends menu is tidier and the canvas actions menu is cleaner. Flip now works every time. And variable-width strokes taper smoothly — fatten a middle node and it eases, no more bulge.
1.1.19 22 Sept
New: vector strokes can cap each end on their own — round one end, flat or square the other — for tapered tails, arrows and calligraphic ends. The colour card is cleaner too: one wheel with harmony folded right onto it (pick a scheme and it lights up on the ring), fewer tabs, nothing buried.
1.1.18 21 Sept
This one's all under the hood: reliability and consistency hardening across the app, plus a large new internal test suite covering the weave, effects, gallery and settings — so everything stays rock-solid as Sable keeps growing. Thanks for drawing with Sable.
1.1.17 21 Sept
• Transform now scales a shape's outline with it — resize a shape and its stroke stays proportional.
• Draw Under now works on vector layers: a new stroke tucks behind your existing art.
• Fixed a selection glitch when moving part of a shape.
• Plus reliability and polish across the drawing tools.
1.1.16 20 Sept
Undo now reaches your very first action — even after a long smudge or melt session, you can walk all the way back to where you started. Smudge and Melt are smoother on big canvases, brush and pen sizes go bigger and scale to your canvas, and the gallery is cleaner: a fresh wordmark, calmer thumbnails, and a tidier folders row.
1.1.15 19 Sept
A polish pass across the whole app.
• Calmer Brush and Pen studios, and a tidier Effects, Colour and Fill panel — the everyday controls up front, the deeper ones a tap away.
• The same controls everywhere, so Sable's quicker to learn.
• An effect combined with a soft layer mask now exports exactly as it looks on the canvas.
• A fresh app icon.
Thanks for drawing with Sable!
1.1.14 19 Sept
Cleaner Effects browser: the effect families now tuck into a tidy, tappable list, so it's faster to find the look you want — with clearer icons and simpler controls.
Fixed: an effect combined with a soft layer mask now exports exactly as it looks on the canvas.
Plus a fresher app icon. Thanks for drawing with Sable!
1.1.13 18 Sept
Smoother editing on the canvas:
• Smooth now holds a shape's exact size — no slow drift while you relax a line.
• The Knife cuts concave shapes (crescents, C's, stars), not just simple ones.
• The vector and pixel selection bars now share one clean, consistent layout.
• On a layer with both paint and vectors, just tap the paint to select it.
• The first paint stroke over vectors no longer hitches.
• Freehand shapes close with a smooth join.
1.1.12 18 Sept
Cleaner, smarter fills. Soft brushes now fill right up to the line with no white halo, filling between strokes that meet the edges just works, and Close Gaps can seal a stroke that stops just short of the canvas edge. Vector and shape fills bloom as they land, and a shape's fill follows your active layer.
Plus a calmer, more consistent look across every panel, menu and dialog, folders that preview their contents, and a crisper app icon.
1.1.11 17 Sept

• 14 new HD paper textures, next to the originals
• New fabric and material textures in Effects, laid out so every swatch is easy to reach
• Smoother switching between tools, cards and panels
