คำผวน คือ การสลับคำ โดยใช้ สระ และ ตัวสะกดของพยางค์หน้ากับพยางค์สุดท้าย มาสลับกัน
ทำให้เกิดเป็นคำใหม่ที่ไม่มีความหมาย แต่การออกเสียงจะคล้องจองกับรูปเดิม ทำให้สื่อความหมายกันได้
คำผวนนั้นนิยมใช้กับคำสองหรือสามพยางค์เป็นส่วนใหญ่ แต่มากกว่านั้นก็พอมีบ้าง แต่อาจจะเข้าใจยากหน่อย ทั้งนี้ที่ต้องเป็นจำนวนพยางค์น้อยเพราะสามารถสลับตำแหน่งได้ง่าย
ส่วนคำพยางค์เดียวนั้นไม่สามารถผวนได้
คำที่พยัญชนะพยางค์หน้าและพยางค์สุดท้ายเหมือนกันหรือเสียงเดียวกันนั้นไม่สามารถผวนได้
คำที่สระและตัวสะกดพยางค์หน้าและพยางค์สุดท้ายเหมือนกันหรือตัวสะกดมาตราเดียวกันนั้นไม่สามารถผวนได้
ส่วนคำหลายพยางค์ อาจต้องแยกเป็นส่วน ๆ ไม่สามารถสลับตำแหน่งอย่างคำน้อยพยางค์ วิธีการสร้างคำผวน เรียกว่า "ผวน" หรือ "การผวนคำ"
