What would you sacrifice to protect something that’s important to you?

That’s the question underpinning the computer-animated film Next Gen, the captivating story of the bond between a strong-willed girl named Mai and a mysterious robot, known only as 7723. Critically acclaimed after featuring at the Cannes Film Festival, it’s now available on Netflix.

Set in a not-too-distant future, robots are entrenched in society, used everywhere from offices to homes. Mai however dislikes these formulaic machines. The robots go about their daily tasks faithfully: brushing teeth, drying hair and cleaning rooms. But they are also fond of meddling. What Mai really craves, is more of her mother’s attention. One day, Mai and her mother attend a launch event for a new product by the home-robot-maker, IQ Robotics.

During the event, Mai sneaks away without her mother noticing. But she’s spotted by security robots who give chase, forcing her to find a hiding place in a nearby laboratory.

There, she discovers the mysterious 7723. When the machine returns something that Mai drops, she senses that 7723 is different from the others. He listens to her and the pair quickly grow at ease in each other’s company. Soon, their friendship is formed.

But 7723 has a problem. His memory system is partially damaged and there is a limit to the amount of data he can store. Every night, he must choose what to delete in order to protect an important function for which he was created.

As his memories with Mai increase, he must decide what to save and what to erase.
