With its friendly approach and awesome updates, Duolingo’s long been one of our favorite apps for learning another language. Its secret: making the process genuinely fun. Engaging mini-games test your reading, writing, and speaking skills, and joining a club (where you can encourage and compete with others) adds a great social element. Bonus: all those languages and games are available for free!
The best out there
I have tried a lot of language apps and Duolingo is the one that works best for me. The effort that is put into these essentially free courses is astounding.
I want to give a particular shoutout to the French course because while in other courses you’re sometimes flying blind at first, in the French one you get short grammar explanations which make it into a full learning experience.
I also love how this is the only app that really pays attention to its visual side with the fun and, most importantly (and unusually), consistent illustrations. This might actually be on some level the main reason I always get back to Duo over other apps. It also develops and changes all the time, every couple of weeks surprising me with a new small tweak.
And, last but not least, it works. After a couple of months I notice a huge improvement in my French with very little effort. Looking forward to continuing this one and other courses.
(And if I may have one small request: please make the Latin course bigger.)
Great app, but...
This is a fantastic app and no doubt a great initiative, but everyone thinks that so you can go read other reviews. I’m definitely giving 5 stars, but it still could use a few tweaks and improvements.
Like for example software integration on i-devices with changing keyboards. If the app did automatically change the keyboard for the right language it would make things much more enjoyable and help avoid mistakes that are caused by the wrong autocorrect not by the user (imo autocorrect should be fully switched off by the way) especially when learning more languages, because right now it’s especially inconvenient when you’re learning 2, 3, 4 languages, which kinda feels like punishment for ambition.
A few technical tweaks like that would improve an already great app as I mentioned before.
