Experts’ opinion:
PCMag: “[Proton VPN’s] is a slick VPN with an excellent collection of advanced features, and it has the best free subscription plan we've seen. Few competitors can match its mix of affordability, features, and design. For all that, it gets a rare five-star rating and earns our Editors' Choice award”
TechRadar: “The completely free tier is something no other competitor [...] offers.
Wired: "The best VPN" "Overall, Proton VPN is very fast"
I was so far very happy about your service but since a couple of month i see more and more problems: servers unavailable for weeks like Taiwan, Peru, Argentina or South Korea, still few servers available compared to competitors and higher prices. Still this is a very good service with efficient customer support so I hope that all of this will shortly be fixed!

Disappointment
kr_ykoo
Proton used to be the best free VPN there was. I had server outage problems like twice but it's understandable since everyone has these eventually. Now though you've taken away the only feature that made this app stand out above others: manual server selection of the most anticipated locations. One in western Europe, one in eastern Asia and one in North America. Why would I, as a Pole, would wanna use a server in Poland when I can just use Cloudflare instead with even better results? This recent update was very disappointing. I'm giving 2 stars instead of one because of the sentimental value this app once had.
Developer Response
With the Free plan changes, we aim to provide optimal speeds and latency to everyone using our free, unlimited, ad-free VPN. With new free servers in Romania and Poland, default auto-connect to the fastest server available, and a better load-balancing formula, you will have optimal latency and available bandwidth. That said, although you can't select a specific server as a free user, you can always change the server that was initially assigned to you. To connect to a server of your choice, please consider upgrading your plan (https://protonvpn.com/pricing).
„Always on” makes my phone unusable
Shamsham30x5
Love it, but why do you don’t give me option to turn off „always on”. Main intention was to use VPN on public networks, not everyday. It worked just fine on my home WiFi so unability to turn off „always on” was bit strange, but I can live with it. On mobile data I simply cannot use internet, my signal strength in place I live is not great, maybe that’s one of the reasons, maybe I cannot set it up correctly, yet it boils down to „I cannot use internet with protonVPN installed”. Does premium plan gives you opportunity to turn of „always on” on iOS?
Developer Response
The always-on VPN feature is permanently activated on the iOS app, although it goes into effect only when you're connected to a Proton VPN server. In other words, with this feature, if your device is disconnected from one of our VPN servers, the app will automatically re-establish a secure VPN connection. However, the feature shouldn't cause any issues when you're disconnected from Proton VPN. Please contact us using the 'Report an issue' option in the app settings with more details so we can investigate further.
Improved since last year

I initially tried it out around a year ago and it was lagging behind competition. Seems like all the issues are resolved now and the vpn seems to work glawlessly and is pretty fast, so I switched to proton.
