Missing handy functions pushing you into paid version
kulbaszon
I just finished my test run of splitwise after using SettleUp with my friends for over two years now. And we are not switching.- App misses a "master view" where someone from the group can view all amount due between group members, copy it and send out as a "call to action" for everyone - you have to click around to see who owns how much to whom; we do make a lot of mini groups for weekend trips and close them afterwards, so sending a final, "frozen" state in an email to everyone comes in handy.- You don't have simple calculator, so you cannot easily calculate some basic amount of money. Think "I gave three bus tickets to Johnas" or "Anna had wine, oysters and onion soup whilst Angelika only ate a steak, rest is mine" when inputting a restaurant bill. You end up using external calculator.- Currency conversion. Messes up settlements a lot: you are forced to make several transactions to same person in various currencies, which defeats the whole option of reducing it's number (and thus settling up complexity). Available in paid version, which is pricey and comes only in a form of subscription. Without this function, virtually any abroad trip is easier to be held in Google Spreadsheets.- No single payment paid option. I could convince a group of friends to pay a small fee up front, but none would agree to have subscription for just a few trips or scarce meetings.Unless you travel for a year with one person so you can afford Premium - go for SettleUp.
Super but for me, one option is missing
klewka
Super, but for me, one option is missing - connecting two people in a group, into a pair. As we have, for example, two couples and two singles, there should be an option to add up the expenses and costs of two couples (usually having one account). The rest is great even in the free option.
Developer Response
Thanks for your feedback! We'd love to improve the experience for couples. In the meantime, have you tried modifying the split on an expense by shares? This will allow you to assign 2 shares to 1 person in the pair. I hope this helps; please send additional feedback or questions to support@splitwise.com.

I was extremely disappointed with splitiwse. Feature wise the app works fine. I even get limiting the daily expenses to 5 (which is very little) but at least it’s fair that I’m getting a functioning app, just less of it because I’m not paying. However, the 10s timer paywall every time I’m trying to add an expense is a “feature” that is very deliberately making the app unusable for free customers and coercing them into paying the paid subscription. Just really disappointed with such an approach to users, moved to settle up right away and got all I wanted for free 🤷♀️
Limited entries per day and waiting time to add the expense makes this app impossible to use.

Used this app for almost 4 years, usually once/twise per year for trips with friends. I really liked it. What an unpleasant surprise I got today trying to set up a new trip calculator and finding these “brilliant” blocks added to force people to pay for pro version (which I don’t need). Already found another app that does the same job for free, will ask friends to switch. Bye bye Splitwise! Applause for the genius in your company who came up with this and made you lose app users.
Various fixes and improvements.
