VISCompass enables a smartphone to function as an audio-compass and navigation aid. It enables visually impaired crew to helm a yacht or motorboat under the guidance of an experienced skipper. It also enables experienced VI sailors to reduce their dependence on sighted crew. Starting from steering a compass course effectively, VI sailors progress to developing skills like sailing to the wind and tacking the boat. VISCompass’ help function is available in both text and audio format , and the audio-compass settings are adjustable to suit different conditions.
