- Added Earthquake Early Warning Real-Time Update Notifications (Live Activities) to Early Access - Added shortcuts to the Strong-Motion Monitor layer - Updated the Privacy Policy ◆ Earthquake Early Warning Real-Time Update Notifications When an Earthquake Early Warning (Forecast or Warning) is issued, a Live Activity will now display the Estimated Seismic Intensity at your current location, along with a Countdown Timer showing the number of seconds until strong shaking is expected to arrive. This information is updated in real time on your Lock Screen, in Notification Centre, on the Dynamic Island, and elsewhere. Previously, you had to unlock your device and open the app to see the Earthquake Early Warning countdown. With this update, you can now check that information directly from the Lock Screen. Real-Time Update Notifications are initially being offered as an “Early Access” benefit for Supporters’ Club members. Early Access lets members try newly developed features before everyone else, with those features later being made available to all users for free. We will announce the timing of the general release once it's been decided. ◆ Strong-Motion Monitor Layer Shortcuts We’ve added two new shortcuts for quickly opening the Strong-Motion Monitor layer: a widget that can be placed on the Lock Screen, and a control that can be added to Control Centre or assigned to the Action button. When assigned to the Action button, simply press and hold the button to open the Strong-Motion Monitor layer. ◆ About Early Access “Early Access” is a benefit for paid NERV Disaster Prevention Supporters’ Club members that lets them use new features before everyone else. For details, see the Supporters’ Club membership information in the app’s Menu tab. ◆ Delivering Information Even One Second Faster The year 2026 marks 15 years since the Great East Japan Earthquake and 10 years since the 2016 Kumamoto Earthquake. Then, on July 28, an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.1 and a maximum Seismic Intensity of 7 struck the Kumamoto region of Kumamoto Prefecture, which the Japan Meteorological Agency named the “2026 Kumamoto Earthquake.” By the end of August, Earthquake Early Warnings (warning level) had already been issued more than 20 times. To deliver information even one second faster, we’ve spent years strengthening our information delivery infrastructure and improving the speed of the app. With this update, we’ve been able to implement Real-Time Update Notifications using features provided by the operating system, allowing us to deliver critical information even more quickly than before. We hope that being able to see this information directly on the Lock Screen will help you take action to protect yourself even one second sooner. Gehirn will continue working to further strengthen the delivery of disaster prevention information.

- Fixed an issue where "Emergency" wouldn’t display correctly in the timeline information on the "Weather Warnings/Advisories" detail screen - Other bug fixes We would like to express our deepest condolences to those who lost their lives in the 2026 Kumamoto Earthquake and the disasters caused by the heavy rain that began on August 13. Our thoughts are with all those who were affected, and we sincerely hope that their lives and well-being can recover as soon as possible. ◆ Developer Update In July, alongside developing new features for the push notification engine, the development team also worked on improving the stability and performance of the app and its systems. Through repeated testing, measurement, and analysis of various implementations, we were able to make significant improvements in these areas. In the process, we also identified a bug in the language runtime and implemented a workaround, gaining a number of valuable insights along the way. We deployed these improvements to production on July 27. Then, shortly after reporting the results to the team on the 28th, the 2026 Kumamoto Earthquake struck at 16:27. All we could do was watch and hope as the new version of the system handled a massive surge in notification traffic. Notifications were sent without any issues, but as we learned about the scale of the damage on the ground, the continued seismic activity, and then the heavy rain that followed from August 13, our hearts ached as we thought about the suffering and grief of all those who were affected. We truly hope that everyone whose lives were affected can return to a sense of normalcy as soon as possible.

- Additional fixes related to the new disaster weather information system - Fixed an issue where typhoons would sometimes not render in the “National” home screen tab - Updated the Privacy Policy We would like to apologise for the concern caused by the development team update in our previous release notes. We received many messages of support and concern from users and other organisations, and were even contacted by members of the National Diet and the Japan Meteorological Agency asking if there was anything they could do to help. Though we can’t go into too much detail out of consideration for our relationships with other organisations, we have maintained regular communication with the Japan Meteorological Agency throughout both the lead-up to and rollout of the new disaster weather information system. More recently, we also visited the JMA headquarters for an in-person meeting to exchange views and share information, and have submitted requests for further improvements. Now that the work surrounding the new disaster weather information system has settled down, the development team has once again started work on new features! We’re excited to get them to you as soon as possible, so please bear with us for a little longer. Thank you for always supporting the NERV Disaster Prevention app.

* Added support for the new disaster weather information system The development team has been working around the clock for weeks to implement this major overhaul of our disaster weather warnings and advisories systems. We deeply sympathise with the Japan Meteorological Agency and the many disaster prevention organisations that are also working through large-scale system changes. Because these changes affect long-standing operational and technical infrastructure, many organisations across the country are facing significant adaptation costs, including system upgrades and revisions to operational procedures. Even just before launch, the Japan Meteorological Agency continues to revise municipal support tables and sample messages, leaving little time for integration testing or trial operations before the system goes live. As a result, there may be unforeseen issues during the initial rollout. Please be mindful that there may still be bugs or issues in the NERV Disaster Prevention app while we work through this transition. During this year’s flood season, we encourage everyone to avoid relying solely on disaster weather information and to use their own judgment to stay safe above all else. Though you may not notice a difference in your everyday use, these kinds of updates are necessary to improve support for the latest operating systems, and to keep the app running smoothly. Speed and performance have also been optimised! ◆ Supporters' Club Membership Information The app has now surpassed 8 million downloads! We are truly grateful that so many people use the NERV Disaster Prevention app in their everyday lives. As the number of users grows, so do costs related to data processing and network usage. This makes support from our Supporters' Club members all the more important. For this reason, we've started displaying membership information at the top of the Home screen for users who have not yet joined the Supporters' Club. This banner will not be shown to active Supporters' Club members. ◆ Dev Team Updates This month, we've spent a significant amount of time handling and responding to hearings and research requests from various central government ministries and agencies. Although we handle these hearings free of charge, we do so because we hope to contribute to improving disaster preparedness nationwide – not just for ourselves. This update improves the handling of network communication errors and network communication processing. [Update from the Development Team] On August 31st, the NERV Disaster Prevention App Development Team participated in the Miyagi Prefecture Comprehensive Disaster Prevention Drill held in Marumori, Miyagi Prefecture. On the day, we also exhibited our disaster response vehicles, and were able to welcome many visitors, including local residents. Despite the sweltering heat and high humidity, some people even travelled over an hour to come and see us! We'd like to express our gratitude to everyone who visited us.

We've fixed some issues where widgets may not have displayed correctly when using the home screen tint feature in iOS 18. Additionally, an issue where typhoon paths would not display correctly when a typhoon redevelops after having once dissipated has been rectified. We apologise for the inconvenience caused to our users who experienced widget issues following the previous update. Please ensure you stay cool, as the recent hot weather continues. Strict vigilance is necessary in order to protect yourself against heatstroke.

This update features minor changes to the handling of earthquake and tsunami information, based on specification changes provided by the Japan Meteorological Agency. Specifically, changes to the tsunami information data format enable the display of additional text values for tsunami wave height gauge forecasts and observations. The earthquake information specification was also updated to replace Japan's local coordinate system with the World Geodetic System for positioning. This change affects how estimated arrival times and seismic intensity values are calculated for earthquake early warnings. As a result of these changes, we've also renewed our forecasting services license to ensure our services remain compliant. [Recent News] Gehirn Inc., the company behind the NERV app, recently celebrated its 15th anniversary on July 6th. However, as earthquakes were frequently occurring near the Tokara Islands that day, and some residents had to evacuate as a result, we felt it wouldn't be appropriate to promote this milestone through our regular channels (such as social media) during this disaster. Our thoughts are with the people of Toshima Village as they work to return to normal as soon as possible.

- Added Image Submission to Crisis Mapping posts - Improved Crisis Mapping layer filters - Fixed a bug where the Synoptic Chart layer would not display correctly ◆ Image Posting You can now attach images to your Crisis Mapping reports! Moderators will review submitted images before they are made public. We would greatly appreciate the cooperation of our Supporters' Club members. We've also improved the filtering function so you can now sort by categories and features (such as ostomate-friendly toilets) and by distance or latest posts. ◆ Noto Heavy Rain Disaster We would like to express our condolences to those affected by the recent heavy rains in Noto, as well as our heartfelt sympathy to those who lost their lives. It's heart-wrenching to see the future taken away from many, and to witness Noto, which was striving for recovery, struck once again by disaster. While the app functioned as intended during this period of heavy rain, the sheer scale of the damage and the number of isolated areas have left us feeling helpless and inadequate. Please keep in mind that information may not be as helpful as you'd expect when it matters most. We hope you will use the app's information with the mindset that the user, rather than the information itself, is the key player in making use of it.

Crisis Mapping has been added to the Map layer with version 6.0.0! - Fixed various widget issues - Fixed an issue where the shake detection notification settings were not reflected on the screen ◆ Information to Help Disaster Survivors Restore Their Daily Lives So far, we haven't delivered enough information "that can help disaster victims regain their lives". The Crisis Mapping layer was developed with the aim of visualising information on the situation in an area after a disaster, especially information on water supplies and bathing assistance, disaster waste collection points, and places to apply for disaster victim certificates, among other livelihood support information. Some of this information relates to facilities available year-round, while others need to be updated regularly. We can't collect and organise this vast amount of information on our own, but with the help of our supporters, we hope to create a system where everyone can support those affected by disasters. ◆ A Request to All Supporters Though Crisis Mapping has only just launched, most of the information you may find is still unfilled. A strong user network is essential for creating high-quality information. We hope that you, our supporters, can map nearby toilets, parks, public facilities, etc., in your area on a regular basis in order to help those around you access essential information in the event of a disaster. Toilet information is particularly important for those who need to know if facilities are accessible or ostomate-friendly (for individuals using a stoma, an artificial opening in the abdomen for waste discharge, such as a colostomy or urostomy). - Added "Incoming Rain Alert" Notifications to Supporters' Club Membership Benefits - Updated English translations [Incoming Rain Alerts] This feature uses high-resolution precipitation forecasts from the rain radar to send push notifications if rain clouds are expected to approach within a 1km radius of your current location. Notifications are sent if rain is expected to start within 30 minutes. A second notification is sent if heavy rain is expected within 15 minutes. Notifications may not be sent if rainclouds develop rapidly or if prediction values change significantly. Please note that there might be some notifications even if it does not actually rain. [How to Turn Incoming Rain Alerts On/Off] If you do not wish to receive these notifications, open the [Rain Radar] layer in the [Map] tab and enable or disable notifications from the "i" icon in the upper right-hand corner. This update features the following improvements - Added a feature to re-register current location and registered locations on startup - Fixed an issue where the settings for Shaking Detection notifications weren't being carried over during device migration [Update Notice] From April 18 to July 10, there was an issue where the location information for current and registered locations was being unintentionally deleted from the server, causing push notifications to stop being sent to some users. This update adds a feature that automatically re-registers the location information for your current and registered locations when the app is launched in order to rectify the issue. If you believe you haven't been receiving push notifications since April 18, please update to the latest version and launch the app. We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience this issue may have caused.

This update features the following improvements - Real-Time Seismic Intensity is now displayed on the Earthquake Early Warning screen by default - Improved Real-Time information updates while viewing the Earthquake Early Warning screen - The map on the Earthquake Early Warning screen now shows a larger area around the current location - Improved Shaking Detection algorithm - Improved display of Tsunami Forecast areas - Added a retry process in the event of a network error - Fixed English Translation of certain Tsunami Information [Recent updates from the Development Team] We extend our heartfelt condolences to those affected by the Noto Peninsula Earthquake that occurred at the beginning of this year. We also solemnly remember those who lost their lives. During the Noto Peninsula Earthquake, we weren't satisfied with the performance of our push notification delivery infrastructure, so we tripled the number of instances and quadrupled the memory allocation to each, ensuring notifications were sent out as quickly as possible. We also identified and rectified minor issues in the Strong Motion Monitor layer and the program responsible for determining the notification range of estimated seismic intensity. Despite the unprecedented demand, our systems handled over 900 million accesses, with data transfers exceeding 4TB, at an error rate of 0%. The Strong Motion Monitor layer received a peak access of over 23,000 requests per second. While reinforcing our infrastructure and handling traffic incurs a cost, these expenses are offset by the support of our Supporters' Club members. We sincerely appreciate your ongoing cooperation, which allows us to maintain and improve the system's reliability. Since last year, we have been participating as committee members of the Japan Meteorological Agency's "Study Group on the Provision of Information on Long-Lasting Tsunami." However, given the tsunami warnings issued on January 1st and April 3rd of this year, there is still more work to be done to improve the quality of the information. As we enter the new fiscal year, many of you may be embarking on new endeavours. With the changing seasons, please take care of your health.

This update fixes a few minor bugs. ■ 2023 In Review This year, we experienced complex patterns of data processing, such as tsunamis caused by large volcanic eruptions overseas and a series of large overseas earthquakes, tsunamis caused by earthquakes near Torishima that continued without a known magnitude, and J-ALERTs in the early morning and at night. There were many other non-development tasks as well, such as holding lectures at study groups of the Cabinet Office and the Digital Agency, and participating as a committee member in study groups of the Japan Meteorological Agency and the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications. It was a year in which our role was no longer limited to just developing disaster prevention applications. This release will be the last update of the year. We want to thank you all for your support and for taking good care of the app over the past year. We will continue to update the app in the coming year to make it even more useful for everyone. Misato Katsuragi also commented during the attack of the angels: "You don't care about our reasons, do you? You must be the type of person women hate." Past observations are taken seven times a day (every 3 hours), and you can view forecasts for 24 and 48 hours ahead (updated twice daily). ■ Early Access "Early Access" is a perk for NERV Disaster Prevention Supporter's Club members (paid) to access new features ahead of public release. For details, refer to the membership guide in the app's Menu tab. ■ Lightning Layer The previously featured Lightning layer in Early Access is now available to all users. This update improves support for iOS 17. Our Development Team has been hard at work to ensure there are no issues with the app in iOS 17. We've also been fine-tuning the strong-motion monitor and push notification systems, as well as making adjustments related to the River Levels layer. We recently conducted a survey on X (formerly Twitter) that showed 72.7% of users prefer to use the Dark theme, while 27.3% prefer the Light theme. If you've been using the app without knowing you can change the theme, contrast, text size and thickness, we recommend you check out [Appearance] in the [Menu] tab. It also appears that some users may be unaware that we launched the "Strong-Motion Monitor Layer" on September 1st. With this feature, you can see real-time tremors all over Japan. You can access it by going to the [Map] tab → [Layers] button → Strong-Motion Monitor. When enabled, real-time seismic intensity will also be displayed on the Earthquake Early Warning screen. Today is the 100th anniversary of the Great Kanto Earthquake that occurred on September 1st, 1923. At the time, little information was available to the public to use in disaster management. However, 100 years later, we're able to provide a countdown of expected seismic intensity and an estimated time of arrival tailored to each user based on their location, as well as real-time observed seismic intensity, updated every second. We've been working for years to strengthen our information delivery infrastructure and speed up our apps to deliver information as quickly as possible. We are very pleased to provide new information "every second" with this update. The information delivery infrastructure and applications we have implemented are just the beginning of this technology. The provision of such advanced seismic information has a long history of legislative, administrative, and research and development efforts, and is the result of the continuous efforts of our predecessors. This technology will only continue to improve in the future. We, too, are committed to leaving a better disaster information system for the next generation. ・ Added "Strong-Motion Monitor" layer to Early Access What is "Strong-Motion Monitor"? The Strong-Motion Monitor layer is a feature that displays real-time Seismic Intensity across Japan, based on the Seismic Observation Network operated by the National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Resilience (NIED). When an earthquake occurs, you can observe the real-time propagation of the earthquake through the colour changes displayed by each station. When changes occur at several observation stations, the screen automatically zooms to the affected area, and highlights the stations based on a grid. When all of the grid squares are gone, the screen returns to show the whole country. When an Earthquake Early Warning (Forecast) is issued, the Strong-Motion Monitor layer automatically integrates and displays the information from the EEW, including the forecasted Seismic Intensity distribution, and propagation of the P and S waves alongside the Strong-Motion data. A guide will be displayed the first time you use the Strong-Motion Monitor layer, so please read it carefully before using the feature. The Strong-Motion Monitor layer has been experimentally developed since February 2023 based on the "Joint Research Implementation Plan for the Utilisation of Strong-Motion Monitor Data", which was established by four parties: the National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Resilience (NIED), Gehirn Inc., TBS Television Inc., and TBS・JNN NEWS DIG LLC, on December 21st, 2022. Due to the real-time nature of Seismic Intensity data being updated every second, we aim to test the service's durability against sudden increases in access during earthquake events, and verify the service's stability with a limited number of users during this Early Access period. We plan to release the Strong-Motion Monitor Layer to all users from September 1st, 2023. Please note that this is a separate service from the "Strong-Motion Monitor" web service provided by NIED. Gehirn Inc. has a dedicated communications line installed at NIED for information processing and distribution for the NERV Disaster Prevention app in order to provide this service. "Early Access" is a paid benefit for NERV Disaster Prevention Supporters' Club members to use new features in advance. For more information, please refer to the enrollment guide in the app's "Menu" tab.

- Flood Forecasts for designated rivers have been added - Fixed a problem where water level observation points overlapping your current location could not be selected The JMA, MLIT and prefectural governments jointly issue designated river flood forecasts as a public service to keep residents informed on river conditions near them. The four levels of flood information associated with a forecast are Flood Alert (equivalent to Warning Level 2), Flood Warning (equiv. Level 3), High Risk of Flooding (equiv. Level 4) and Floods Occurring (equiv. Level 5). This update also adds push notifications for when a designated river flood forecast is issued. You can now also see the forecast water level in the height graph when you tap on a station. We still have more features coming for landslide and flood information in the future, so we greatly appreciate your support as we continue to work on them.

This update fixes a bug where the river layer may appear underneath certain map features. The release of "River Water Level Information" on June 2nd coincided with many rivers exceeding the emergency flood level shortly after release, and our systems sent numerous push notifications to users. We spent the day monitoring API errors and ensuring the reliability of the system. Even in Chiyoda-ku (where our office is located), the nearby Kanda River experienced an increase in water level due to heavy rain, so on the very first day of release, we personally received notifications from the app indicating that the flood levels had been exceeded. As users of the app ourselves, we were able to make use of the water level information. We managed to release the update just in time within a tight schedule and were fully dedicated to delivering information without issue. However, there were some areas where adjustments were insufficient, and this update addresses those issues. As we enter the rainy season, we hope you'll make use of our push notifications and the new river water level information layer to stay safe. We will continue to work on further enhancing the delivery of Disaster Prevention information and would be grateful for your ongoing support.

Added a new River Water Level feature In this update, we've added a new 'River' layer. With the River layer, you can check the water levels at the monitoring stations and risk management-type water level gauges, updated every 10 minutes. - Display Method You can access this by selecting the 'River' layer from the layer switching button on the 'Radar' tab. Long-Period Ground Motion refers to the slower, longer waves produced by an earthquake that can cause the upper floors of high-rise buildings to shake/sway more strongly. This update adds support for Long-Period Ground Motion forecasts in line with the updated requirements and displays alongside the earthquake early warning when long-period ground motion is expected to occur. Other improvements include support for higher resolution estimated seismic intensity distribution data, seismic intensity calculation using the PLUM method, and the ability to display multiple earthquake early warnings when issued simultaneously. The JMA has been introducing a series of earthquake-related improvements, and the NERV Disaster Prevention development team has been working hard to bring these improvements to users as quickly as possible.
