Motorised Wheelchair Trainer
Practise before you drive
Free · Designed for iPad. Not verified for macOS.
Learning to drive a motorised wheelchair takes practice, and the first attempts are often the most daunting — in a corridor, near a doorway, or with people waiting. This app gives you somewhere to make those first attempts safely.
Sixteen lessons take you from switching the chair on to completing a full obstacle course, one skill at a time. Practise for a few minutes at home, as often as you like, at your own pace.
IMPORTANT: This simulator supplements physical training. It does not replace it. Every wheelchair handles differently, and nothing replaces supervised practice with a qualified trainer or therapist.
WHAT YOU PRACTISE
• The basics — powering on, moving off, stopping, and choosing a speed
• Reversing, and judging where the back of the chair goes
• Turning in both directions, forwards and in reverse
• Figure-eights and pivot turns for tight spaces
• Doorways, corridors and ramps
• Parallel parking and reverse parking
• Boarding a bus, including the ramp and the wheelchair bay
• A final obstacle course that puts it all together
Each lesson has a clear goal and an on-screen coach that talks you through it. Target boxes show exactly where to stop and which way to face, so there is no guesswork.
BUILT FOR THE PEOPLE WHO USE IT
• English, Chinese and Malay — chosen once when you first open the app, and changeable at any time
• Left- or right-hand controls, which move the joystick and the coach panel to the side that suits you
• Adjustable joystick size, for a fingertip or a stick-on thumb control
• Large, high-contrast text and simple screens
• A training record showing time spent, attempts made and lessons passed — useful to review with a therapist
PRIVATE BY DESIGN
The app works entirely on your device. There is no account, no sign-up, and no advertising. It collects no personal information and needs no internet connection at all. Your progress and your training record stay on your phone or tablet.
FOR THERAPISTS AND CARERS
Lessons unlock in order so that skills build on each other, and there is an option to open them all at once for demonstrating a particular manoeuvre. The training record shows how many attempts each lesson took, which is often more revealing than whether it was passed.
