The power of Apple silicon and macOS make it possible.
When you combine the power of Apple silicon with the latest macOS, gaming on Mac is better than ever. Here are a few of the features that make gaming on Mac so amazing—and our favorite titles for experiencing the platform’s full gaming potential.
On Mac with Apple silicon, Game Mode provides smoother gameplay and more consistent frame rates by ensuring games get the highest CPU and GPU priority, while lowering usage for background tasks. Game Mode also gives wireless game controllers and AirPods better responsiveness by dramatically reducing latency. It all adds up to a more immersive experience in games like Frostpunk 2, Stray, Resident Evil 4, and the upcoming Assassin’s Creed Shadows.
In addition to making you quicker on the draw, a controller unlocks features like rumble feedback, custom button-mapping, and screen recording. Most Bluetooth and wireless console controllers work with Mac out of the box; you can also use popular wired racing wheels, shifters, and pedals.
Pro tip: Configure the Gaming Focus to turn on automatically whenever you connect a controller—no more distractions when you’re about to beat your high score!
When gaming with recent AirPods on macOS Sequoia, Personalized Spatial Audio allows for more immersive sound in compatible games. And when using AirPods Pro (2nd generation), you get high-quality 16-bit, 48 kHz game audio even during voice chat and streaming, along with better wireless audio latency.
In macOS Sequoia, you can also start playing next-generation games faster than ever. The installation process requires less free storage space and may finish sooner (depending on your connection); and as a game or app installs, you can see the time as well as size remaining, along with the option to pause and resume downloads. Later this year, you’ll be able to install games on an alternate drive.
Developers continue to release titles that take advantage of Metal and Apple silicon to provide a more immersive experience. For the latest releases and updates, head to “The Latest Must-Play Mac Games” on the Discover tab of the Mac App Store.
