I was just on my Apple TV when I saw and advertisement for this Puyo game on Apple Arcade. I brushed it off at first but then I thought about it again. The last time I had played Puyo Puyo was when I randomly bought Puyo Tetris 2 on the switch in 2020. I hadn’t played recently at all and usually stuck to Tetris. But this time I wanted to try Puyo Puyo by itself with Puzzle Pop. So I got on a free trial and Pandora’s box was opened. I was addicted to Puyo Puyo. I wanted to play lots of more Puyo I even bought the first 4 Puyo games on SNES and N64. That aside this game is a very good Puyo game. It’s similar to Puyo 20th Anniversary in a sense that it contains a lot of different modes to play Puyo. (Thank God there’s no slots). The story was also all right in that it kept me coming back for updates. My only problem is that it’s exclusive to Apple Arcade which is more of a nit pick than anything. I just hope Puyo has more in store for the future. It’s been three months since I first played Puzzle Pop and Puyo absolutely ate up my summer vacations. That’s all I wanted to say besides SEGA PLEASE BRING QUEST TO THE WEST. Other than that thank you for giving me this Apple Arcade exclusive because I probably would not have heard about it other wise and would have never gotten into Puyo.

sega released this game only on apple arcade because puyo puyo is bad. there’s a reason why they were so ashamed of this franchise that half of the games in america were spin offs or reskins. but this game is good because of the good gameplay and sega finally got away from using the same 2d assets in every game even though it’s just puyo puyo chronicle. play this game because each time YOU download it, YOU are sending a message to sega that says “the west likes puyo puyo please make more games andpromote them right and also make a puyo puyo live action movie.”

Seems like the core gameplay would be fun, but the menu system should be scrapped and completely started over with an actual UX designer at the helm.Perhaps people who have played this franchise on other devices can make sense of what’s going on, but it seems like almost no thought was given to making the initial startup - before gameplay tutorials- make any sense at all. Why are save banks even a thing on a smartphone? Why is a vertical stacking game only available to play in landscape orientation? Why did I have to click through at least 5 layers of menus to start a regular game, but still there was no explanation of different gameplay modes? I have no idea what I was doing but somehow got it to play the game, but the overall experience was so frustrating I gave up.It’s so frustrating when two giant corporations with huge numbers of employees combine forces to produce a result that seems to have had absolutely no human thought put into how the basic gameplay experience will work for an actual user on an actual device. Judging by other reviewers it seems a good number of people love this franchise, it seems the desire for corporate synergy and reaching new audiences was met with no resources to actually make this implementation work.

I'm a big time puyo fan ever since childhood and this is by far one of the most amazingly crafted games that I have played in this franchise. Sure, the assets are reused and the translation is giving but overall the game itself is a ton of fun to play with a new overhaul of the menu, UI and the story. That being said, having an apple arcade exclusive puyo title is sad as it alieniates part of the fanbase that enjoys puyo but doesn't have access to apple. The online mode also is pretty barren as I've so far only faced off against bots. It's a bit of a shame as this does have great potential but having it locked behind a subscription limits where this game and the franchise as a whole can go.
