Your budget, your data, your control. Money Journal helps you plan your spending, track expenses, and save — with no bank account linking required. Try it free today.
Your finances are private. Your budget app should be too.
Money Journal is a privacy-first budget planner and expense tracker that works without linking your bank account. No credentials to share, no third-party data access, no risk. Just you, your plan, and complete control over your money.
Most budgeting apps only tell you where your money went. Money Journal helps you plan where it will go.
PLAN YOUR BUDGET
Create your spending plan before the month begins. Add recurring income from salaries, freelance work, rental payments, or dividends. Set fixed expenses for predictable bills like rent, subscriptions, and insurance. Budget flexible spending for groceries, dining, and entertainment. Define savings goals and track your progress toward each one.
Organize your money into dedicated wallets — emergency fund, checking, savings, or however you manage your accounts. Your closing balance automatically carries forward as next month's opening balance, so your plan always reflects reality.
FLEXIBLE BILLING CYCLES
Real life doesn't follow a single schedule, and neither should your budget. Set each income and expense on its own cycle — daily, weekly, bi-weekly, monthly, quarterly, or yearly. Recurring transactions are generated automatically, and reminders ensure you never miss a bill or payment.
LOG TRANSACTIONS YOUR WAY
Add transactions in seconds against your planned categories. Scan receipts with your camera for AI-powered import that fills in the amount, category, and details automatically. Import transactions from bank statements and CSV files. See your forecast versus actuals in real time, and always know exactly how much you have left to spend.
REVIEW AND UNDERSTAND YOUR FINANCES
See your cash flow at a glance with clear income versus expense breakdowns. Dive into spending allocation by category, view monthly and yearly summaries, and spot patterns before they become problems.

If it had the layout of mint/Truebill it would be on top!
Rai Renee
This app is soooo aesthetically pleasing. Feels like a video game almost. The downside is that it doesn’t have a dashboard you should be able to open your app and see all the essential money related items as a snapshot. With this app you have to click between them. Now if you have a pretty simple financial life this could work well but man if it was laid out like true bill or kint the other apps would be in troubllleeeee! Kudos for the Design though. It makes you want to budget. So fun
New Redesign destroys a once great app
Mr. Feldman
The overhaul UI redesign of this app is utter GARBAGE. As a paying user from before, all the good qualities of the app, like simply spending tracking, and easy to use budget settings that let me customize as needed - all gone. All I wanted was an app that I could input my budget for the month, say “Food. Set a budget of $100 that would rollover, and every time I spent money on food ide just quickly hop on the app and press the subtract button and input the amount. When I was planning on going out, I could quickly check the app to see how much I had left to spend for the month. S I M P L E. Now, the app has like 5 different “budgets” making overall viability of your finances impossible, it highlights the amount of money spent (why do I care to see how much I’ve spent??) instead of how much I have LEFT (this is now a small greyed number) and I have to go through 2 different screens and forced to select a category from a list. It’s so unnecessarily complicated. CHERRY ON THE CAKE: ALL MY DATA AND SPENDING INFORMATION THAT WAS IN PROGRESS THIS MONTH IS GONE. The system said it migrated the data, but there’s random “rollover” charges from months ago, and spending on the monthly budget from months ago as well. The team took a flaming crap on this app. REFUND ALL OLD USERS.

Great for college students
ghoulgoon
I am a college student— I work and save a large portion of my income during the summer, then transfer a certain amount out of my savings each week during the school year. Every other budget app I’ve tried relies on tracking bank transactions and doesn’t register transfers from savings as “income”, making them almost impossible for anyone without steady income to use. Having to manually log every transaction is a little less convenient, but it’s worth it to be able to quickly and easily check how much money I have left for the week. One feature I would love to see would be the ability to add recurring payments for bills and subscriptions. Right now, I calculate the monthly cost of all my bills and subscriptions, divide it by 4, and subtract that from my weekly budget— but that means I have to redo my entire budget every time that amount changes. Being able to add bills and subscriptions, as well as see upcoming payments, would be really useful.

Hey there!Thank you for supporting the app and I'm glad it's helping you out for college. I really appreciate the feedback. The next update will be a big one that includes automatic bill and income tracking as well calculations so you don't have to calculate weekly/monthly/yearly yourself; this should hopefully make it much easier for you. :)There will be a few more surprises that I hope you'll enjoy.Feel free to reach out if you have any questions or other feedback.
Only good for no flexibility

I thought this was great when I first downloaded! I’m trying to figure out my monthly spending habits and keep better control by seeing where it is going vs. if I’m within my overall budget or not as I’m working to live severely below my means this year. HOWEVER, I cannot move money from one budget to another..that’s fine I guess. But what’s worse is I have $400 typically for grocery- I have a $280 gift card and want to change my February budget to $100 moving the other $300 to a trip and not to show as “grocery”. I can of course just make a “trip” transaction but it throws off the data. When I changed my amount to $100 it then left january in the negative and with rollover turned on became completely inaccurate! I’m also not able to open and see all categories of transactions at once anywhere without exporting so that is lame. If you don’t anticipate your budgets to change ever this is good. Or if you want to start it fresh every month without rollovers that would work too. Just upset I paid $$$$ for this and it is missing basic practical functions. 🥵
Money Journal has been completely redesigned and rebuilt from the ground up — new look, new engine, same commitment to keeping your finances private.
HERE'S WHAT'S NEW
Redesigned from scratch
Every screen has been rethought. A cleaner layout, smoother navigation, and a modern interface that makes managing your budget feel effortless. If you've been with us since the beginning, this will feel like a brand new app — because it is.
Plan before you spend
Create your full monthly budget before the month begins. Set income, fixed expenses, flexible spending, and savings goals — then track how reality compares to your plan throughout the month.
Wallets
Organize your money into dedicated wallets — checking, savings, emergency fund, or however you manage your finances. Closing balances carry forward automatically, so your plan always reflects where you actually stand.
Flexible billing cycles
Not everything runs on a monthly clock. Set each income and expense on its own schedule — daily, weekly, bi-weekly, monthly, quarterly, or yearly. Recurring transactions generate automatically.
AI receipt scanning
Point your camera at a receipt and let Money Journal do the rest. The amount, category, and details are filled in automatically — so logging expenses takes seconds, not minutes.
CSV and statement import
Import transactions from bank statements and CSV files directly into your budget. Reconcile your planned spending against actuals without manual entry.
Smarter insights
See your cash flow at a glance. Dive into spending by category, review monthly and yearly summaries, and spot patterns before they become problems.
Still private. Still yours.
No bank account linking. No third-party data access. No ads. Everything lives on your device and syncs only when you choose. Your financial data belongs to you.
Thank you for budgeting with Money Journal. We'd love to hear what you think — leave a review or reach out to us anytime.
