- About the Game
Spades is played with a standard 52-card deck by four players divided into two partnerships. Each hand begins with a bidding phase where players estimate how many tricks (“books”) they expect to win. Teams must cooperate and plan their play to achieve their combined bid.
Players must follow the suit led if possible. The highest card of that suit wins the trick unless a Spade is played. Spades act as the trump suit and override all other suits, with the highest Spade taking the trick.
After all tricks are played:
• Teams score points for meeting or exceeding their bid
• Failing to meet a bid results in penalties
• Extra tricks count as “bags,” which accumulate and may cause deductions
• Matches continue across multiple hands until the target score is reached
This mix of prediction, tactical decision-making, and teamwork makes Spades approachable for newcomers while offering depth for experienced players.
