A skin infection occurs when bacteria or other pathogens penetrate the skin through a wound and proliferate, resulting in discomfort, edema, and discoloration. Bacteria like strep (streptococci) and staph (staphylococci) are typically the cause of skin infections. Other microorganisms, such as viruses, fungi, or parasites, may be at play in some situations. Numerous healthy individuals carry bacteria and other pathogens in their lips, noses, and skin without becoming ill. However, when skin is punctured, cut, or scratched, bacteria can get inside the wound and cause infections, which can result in additional health issues.
