Accelerated Learning!

I used to be a Spanish teacher several years ago and can attest that this app is potent & has greatly accelerated my rate of grasping the German language! I’ve done multiple levels of Rosetta Stone & Babble for casual language learning (French & German) in addition to using lots of techniques I learned when becoming a foreign language teacher. However, my husband recently accepted a job we couldn’t pass up and now I need to kick my pace into high gear so I can get certified in language fluency exams in German in order to be able to get a job there, too. While there is no one magical path to fluency (it doesn’t fall outta the sky, folks!) …this app is potent and in just a few stories I’m already a big fan! I love each of the features- it’s user-friendly and the built-in tools cover everything I need the instant I need it all-the-while exposing me to new and valuable vocab & grammar. Reviewing vocab and verb conjugations is easy & self-directed. This is worth every penny of the subscription fee & is a Top Shelf product!

Excellent concept, weak continued support

The idea and concept for this app is excellent. My very first impression was excellent, but I’m glad I gave it week of use before rating. It seems like some of the stories have real voices reading them, but then some of the newer ones have AI voices. While it’s impressive how far AI voices have come, I wouldn’t pay $10 per month to learn a foreign language from a robot voice. That’s more appropriate for something with a free version like Duolingo. Also, it doesn’t seem like they have added any C1 content for a couple months, which is the content I would be most interested in. Lastly, there isn’t any mechanism by which the user can report bugs, errors or mistakes. I see many stories where the quizzes are buggy (it just displays single numbers as questions and answers) and I just tried an older B2 story where the audio won’t load and it loads the same single translation word for every word starting a couple sentences in. I’ll glean what I can from this app, but will probably cancel after 1 or 2 months max, which is a shame, because this would likely be an app I would perpetually subscribe to, despite the high monthly price, if it were less “abandoned” feeling to me.

I don’t write reviews often at all, but I felt compelled to write one for this app. I’ve tried probably 6-8 German language learning apps and this is the best one for my learning style, by far. You simply select stories/articles that are written in various difficulties that align with international testing standards (A1, A2, B1, B2, etc.). If you don’t understand a word, click on it to see the definition and translation. Furthermore, save it for your flashcards to keep learning it in the future. A1 stories are easy enough for a kindergartner to understand but they’re written about more adult-ey topics (and are therefore more interesting than reading a children’s book in German). On the other hand, C1 stories are advanced and probably difficult for even many Germans to fully understand or comprehend. It’s an excellent app and deserves more recognition, for sure.

Best app for learning to read German!

This is my favorite app to learn German (I have a lot - Duolingo, Busuu, Babbel, etc.). Having a dedicated app that focuses primarily on reading by offering stories written by the levels A1, A2, B1, B2, etc. is critical for reading progression. Having built in word definitions and grammar lookup is awesome. And then having audio by word, sentence, and the entire story PLUS the option to control the audio speed is incredible. You need this app if you are serious about learning German. I used to buy eBooks at the A1, etc. levels, but there was no built in audio, or grammar aids. Just subscribe to this app and you will save money and have greater functionality and user enjoyment and productivity than trying to duplicate the app’s features using other products.
