The Animal Histology app features images from some of Carolina’s best microscope slides, including mitosis in fish embryo and detailed vertebrate histology. The histology photos cover main variations of the four basic tissue types. Text describes the tissues' functions and locations. Because this reference app includes interactive practice sections, it serves in quick review as well as initial learning. The Lite version is free and addresses only mitosis.

This could be a useful study aid, but Carolina fell short of the mark. Basic structures are not labeled, such as the juxtaglomerular apparatus on the kidney, or not shown at all, like the portal triads of the liver. More photos of each tissue would be good, and the stain and magnification should be mentioned on every slide. Another useful feature would be the ability to upload your own photos and add/edit labels. As an educator, I would recommend college level students give this app a miss for now. I like the concept, but this app needs beefing up, especially for $5.

From what I've seen this app is pretty solid, but it is lacking one incredibly useful (and in my mind crucial) feature: The ability to review only one tissue/organ/system at a time, or at the very least skip questions that aren't relevant to the material you're currently studying. I can't really comment on the true depth of the app bc of this limitation. I haven't seen exactly how many slides the app covers as Im trying to prepare for an exam (on blood and hematopoiesis) and I don't have time to go through each of the questions one-by-one.No more than 3 stars for reasons above. No fewer because from what I did see, the content seems solid and the interface flows pretty nicely.Tl;dr - 3 stars bc you cant skip around or focus on a specific tissue/organ.
