Organ Quality Assessment

Free

Transplantation is the best treatment for patients with organ failure, regardless of the organ required. Currently, over 6,000 patients are waiting in the United Kingdom. Focusing on kidney transplantation, the statistics are stark: a patient can live twice as long with a transplant compared to dialysis, and over ten years, a kidney transplant saves the NHS £420,000 per patient. Organs donated for transplantation are sometimes not used due to concerns about infections or cancer, but more commonly, because of fears that they may not function adequately in the recipient, which could lead to serious complications or death. Currently, the assessment of organs for transplantation is subjective and largely dependent on the surgical team’s expertise. In the United Kingdom, the rate of organ use varies significantly between centres, ranging from 30% to 70%. This device aims to assist all surgeons in optimising the use of up to 70% of donated organs. This project will involve training machine learning models to evaluate the quality of organs being considered for transplantation.
