About the Kalimba:
The kalimba, often called the thumb piano, is an African lamellaphone with a wooden soundboard and metal keys. It is traditionally played by plucking the tines with the thumbs and sometimes the forefingers, producing a clear, percussive, and chimelike timbre.
The instrument’s origins trace back over 3,000 years to West Africa, where early versions were made with bamboo or palm blades. Around 1,300 years ago in the Zambezi region, metal-tined kalimbas appeared, leading to the designs we know today.
In the 1950s, ethnomusicologist Hugh Tracey introduced the kalimba to the West and gave it the name “kalimba.” Traditionally, it is known by many names depending on the region:
- Mbira (Zimbabwe, Malawi)
- Sanza or Senza (Cameroon, Congo)
- Likembe (Central Africa)
- Karimba (Uganda)
- Lukeme or Nyunga Nyunga in other parts of Africa
These variations share a common spirit: creating soulful, melodic tones that connect people across cultures. Today, the kalimba is loved worldwide as both a traditional and modern instrument.
