A Game with History:
Chinese Checkers was originally created in Germany in 1892 under the name “Stern-Halma” (Star Halma), inspired by the American game Halma. The “star” refers to the board’s distinctive six-pointed shape.
Despite its name, the game did not originate in China — the name “Chinese Checkers” was popularized in the United States.
In China, the game is known as tiaoqi (跳棋), meaning “jump game.” In Japan, a related variation called “Diamond Game” (ダイヤモンドゲーム) is played with slightly different rules.
How to Play:
Each player starts with 10 marbles (sometimes 15 in two-player or larger board variations).
Your goal is simple: move all your pieces into the opposite corner of the star before your opponents do.
This destination area is called your home.
Taking Turns:
Players take turns moving one piece at a time. On your turn, you can:
Move one step to an adjacent empty space OR Jump over a single adjacent piece (yours or an opponent’s) into the empty space directly beyond it
You can make multiple consecutive jumps in a single turn, as long as each jump is valid. However, you cannot combine a single-step move and jumps in the same turn.
There is no capturing — jumped pieces remain on the board.
Turns move clockwise around the board.
Strategy Tips:
You are not required to make the maximum possible number of jumps.
Sometimes stopping a jump chain early can block an opponent or set up a stronger move later.
Planning ahead and positioning your pieces efficiently is key to winning.
