Fretwise ships with every lesson and song inside the app. No sign-up, no login: make your first sound the moment it installs. Practice works offline, in a basement or on a plane.
■ Guitar and ukulele in one app
Switch instrument on Home and the chord charts, lessons, tuner and songs all switch with it — six strings for guitar, four for ukulele. Progress is tracked separately for each instrument.
■ A 41-song songbook, plus your own
Traditional folk songs and public-domain tunes arranged as chord accompaniments. You can also type in the chords of a song you like and save it as your own.
■ Automatic chord training
Pick a song and the coach works out what to practise and at what speed — learn the chords, drill the changes, then play it through — always with a reason.
■ Auto-play and play-along
The app plays the chords in time and shows the current chord, the next chord and the beat. Listen, play along, or play solo with just the beat. No ads and no upsell while you play.
■ Play pad
Strum the strings on screen with your finger, down or up. Strum faster for a louder sound, or tap a single string for one note — get a song's chord flow into your hands even without an instrument.
■ The mic listens and scores
While you play, your pitch and timing are judged in real time. Every note is marked correct / early / late / missed, and you get your accuracy and the passages you missed at the end.
■ A practice coach decides today's menu
Your practice history is analysed on-device to suggest what to play, how slowly, and how many times. Do well and the tempo rises; struggle and it comes down. Reviews resurface right before you forget.
■ Today's practice widget and reminder
A Home Screen and Lock Screen widget shows your coach's pick for today; tap to open it. The reminder is off until you turn it on — once a day at your chosen time, silent if you've already practised.
■ Find performance videos
Pick a song and guitar or ukulele, and Fretwise opens a YouTube search for covers and chord tutorials — even for songs outside the songbook. Videos open in the YouTube app or your browser; this is the only feature that needs the internet.
■ A step-by-step curriculum of 50 lessons
35 guitar lessons (the first 20 free) and 15 ukulele lessons (free). From holding the instrument to first chords, chord changes, strumming and finishing your first song. Each lesson takes about five minutes.
■ Chord diagrams
19 chords each for guitar and ukulele, showing which finger goes on which fret, with sound — even with the silent switch on. Left-handed mirror mode included.
■ Tuner and metronome
A ±5-cent tuner. Guitar: standard, Drop D, half-step down, DADGAD, open G. Ukulele: standard, low-G, D tuning, baritone. Metronome from 40–240 BPM.
■ Privacy
Mic audio is discarded the moment pitch is detected — never stored. All sound is synthesised on the device. No server, no personal data collected; nothing leaves the app except when you open YouTube.
Fretwise Pro (optional)
15 guitar basic-track lessons, all tab songs, a weekly streak freeze and a deeper practice report. Ukulele mode, the songbook, auto-play and the play pad are free without Pro.
