That's it!
This is exactly the note-taking app I’ve been looking for. Here’s why:- great ink engine: I can’t say technically why it’s better, but I know I like it more than anything I’ve used before.- simplicity: I want to open an app and start taking notes- very powerful: great search, heading identification, ability to reorder pages, image <-> text search, linking- fixed “paper size”: this could have been my #1. Handwriting is a physical act and our brains expect paper to be a fixed size. I can’t pinch to zoom my paper notebooks. The decision to keep the “paper” size fixed — more than any other —brings handwriting, the size of the “paper”, and my mental expectations into alignment.- delightful: the app is delightfully thoughtful and thoroughly considered.Love this app! I think i remember someone saying: Good design isn’t just how well something looks, it’s also how well it works.Well Fineliner looks great and works incredibly well.Give this developer an Apple Design Award!
The missing pencil app
John PB.
I was struggling to find a use for my Apple Pencil. Notes was frustrating me trying to parse my handwriting horribly and putting up barriers to formatting notes. Fineliner solves all that. It lets me take notes, scribble poorly, and it’s just like a piece of paper. Except it’s paper that can OCR my writing and make it searchable. It’s paper I can share with others. It’s the best of paper notebooks and computers combined. If you have an Apple Pencil, try this app. Everyone loves the onboarding. I love the app. I
You had me until you didn't.

Disclaimer: I know this is a 1.0, so I will address the core of my love and sadness for this app, not the rough edges that will be sanded out shortly. my love:The onboarding is magical, whimsical, and downright helpful. Thank you for introducing a new paradigm that I'm sure will be copied and copied and copied. Well played.my sadness:In-app pricing. The cost for colors must be a deliberate choice, and I don't think it was a good one. I get this isn't a subscription. I get that family sharing is included. And I get that a developer needs to earn back against the time spent on development. But as of this writing, the price appears to be $10 for a selection of colors. When I saw that, my heart sank, and I had to ask myself: Would I have paid $10 up front for this? Absolutely not.I'll keep following the app, as I'm sure things will be refined both within the feature set and the business model. Until then, this was a great swing... and a miss.
An Obvious Passion Project

In a world with what feels like a million note-taking apps, it’s incredibly refreshing when one comes along that manages to be genuinely creative, unique, and perfectly simple all at once. Fine Liner feels like an obvious passion project, built by someone who understands that the best tools don’t need to be complicated to be great. The entire market for dedicated writing tablets might only exist because this app wasn’t made soon enough. I’m just glad it’s finally here.
