Hello. Since you don’t have any option to contact you via your website, I’m writing on this platform. I see you have a whole list of updates but they do not contain any information as to what was rue updates contained or improved on. The explanation says nothing, just general small updates here. Minor update there. Your team is relatively new with this being your second app and it being the first one in some thing that everybody uses, i.e. Safari. Therefore, your reputation has not been established I know I do not trust simply just because you say you don’t collect any information. It’s something that would have been earn, and with the fact that you’re being so completely vague about what each update includes that doesn’t look good. Perhaps you can be transparent. Thank you. I will change this review once communication improves and safety becomes obvious as a primary concern.

Hello Mr. Perfect, thanks for your feedback! My team is actually just me, a single independent developer. Regarding the data collected: Apple explicitly asks developers to inform what is or isn't collected by the application and its components. In the case of Bolt, as indicated on the AppStore page, nothing is collected: neither concerning the device nor concerning the user. And for updates: it's about keeping the code up to date with what Apple offers over time. The last one, for example, has significantly reduced the size of the application on the AppStore. I will try to give more details when possible (when it's not just technical). Especially for a future big update that I am considering in the coming weeks ;)

I am always skeptical about ad blockers because a lot don’t work. I like how you don’t seem to be part of a team or corporation. I am always skeptical about ad blockers because a lot don’t work. I like how you don’t seem to be part of a team or corporation. This ad blocker works like it’s developed to and I like how it’s simplistic and almost “underdeveloped”. Makes me trust that you work on the things that matter and not to make the app pretty. Thanks.

Blocks Some Ads and Privacy Concerns

While the main portion of the app blocks some ads, there are some that get through. Using the plus portion of the app raises far to many privacy concerns however. The use of the their DNS does not discuss data logging via the server connection. So while the developer claims privacy is in place there’s simply no proof of that when it comes to the subscription based side of things. And asking about it leaves a lot to be desired as you’ll get no real response just a candid “it works like nextdns” which is simply not the case. The app is super light weight, which is a major plus, and works faster than most Adblockers on the market. It’s the privacy concerns via their “plus” portion that leaves far to many questions to continue to use their application as a daily driver unfortunately.Application updated, still has privacy issues with the “plus” portion. Still do not recommend using this application. The developer clearly collects data via the paid portion of the application. Their DNS settings are not secure.

I tried the app and it’s great that it’s open source and it does work. However, in my experience (on an iPhone 12 Pro Max), even with some (not all) filter lists turned on and enabled in Safari, browsing the web slowed down noticeably. This has not been the case with another open source as blocker available on the App Store, which leads me to believe it is specific to Bolt. Ostensibly, Bolt is pretty heavy on the CPU, which slows down page loading. Would be great if this was improved, as otherwise this is a great app.

Bolt downloads several sets of content-blocking rules that are used by the iOS system directly within Safari when activated, therefore the app itself can't have an impact on CPU. However the rules might be improved for some websites: 1. If you haven't done it already: try to download newer list from the application (I update them from time to time) 2. If the problem persist and it is specific to some websites, maybe you could tell me which in order for me to have a look? Have a nice day!
