I fly internationally several times a year on Alaska. I have uploaded my passport to Airside and it works great when flying Alaska internationally. Recently I was having trouble uploading my new passport to the Airside app. I emailed customer support and they promptly got back to me to try and resolve the issue. It turned out to be with an update that was made to the app. As soon as the issue was resolved they emailed me back that it was resolved and to try it. Sure enough it worked the first time. Great customer service.

Scanning the passport and drivers license

I had a awful time in scanning my passport. I’ve never seen a program where you have to sit the cell phone on the passport and scan it. Why don’t you just make the system scan the actual barcode in the passport and upload The information. !!! And the drivers license same issue if you shake too much like me not really bad but it still did not download my drivers license same thing why can’t we just scan the barcode on the drivers license and let the information pop taking a selfie. This is true, structured or strict in taking your picture. Why can’t you use the picture of the driver or let us download a photo from our cell phone fix these issues it’ll get a five star from me

We appreciate your feedback and regret to hear you had an issue using the Airside app. The steps to enroll a document and have it verified adhere to the security measures we take to confirm there’s no fraudulent activity with your identity, including requiring a “live” selfie to match against the document photo. For passports, the MRZ scan unlocks the NFC chip, which contains the biometric information from a passport’s photo page and is necessary for passport verification. For driver’s licenses, the information present on the front and back is required to verify data from the license issuing agency. The Airside app always makes checking in for international travel simple and convenient. With the app, it takes me less time to initially check in at the airport, and that saves me time to check my bags, get through TSA, and relax at my gate before my flight. It’s one less headache.

Not User Friendly
Technology is Lacking
I couldn’t get the selfie feature of the Alaska Airlines passport verification feature to work. Vague and unhelpful instruction to “mimic my passport photo” doesn’t help when my passport photo is 6 years, old and in completely different lighting. I tried every angle for 5 minutes before I gave up. Not sure how I could have successfully used it, but disappointed that I can’t access my boarding pass without clearing this barrier, when the technology isn’t advanced enough to be usable for the average person in transit

Please know that the guidance only advises to mimic the expression on your passport, not the environment. That said, we are aware of an issue some users are having with passport enrollment and are working on a fix. We understand this is frustrating and hope to have it taken care of as soon as possible.
