YOUR ZMANIM, BY NEIGHBOURHOOD The times were always worked out from your exact coordinates, but the card only ever named the city - so a man in Golders Green read "London", four miles and two minutes away. It now reads "Golders Green, London". PLACE NAMES IN YOUR OWN WORDS Jerusalem now reads Yerushalayim. Safed reads Tzfas for Ashkenaz and Tzfat for Edot HaMizrach, Tiberias reads Teveria or Tveria, Hebron reads Chevron. Modern Israeli names are left as Israelis say them - Ramot stays Ramot - and everywhere else is untouched, so London is still London. Change your nusach and every screen re-labels at once. "FOLLOW MY PHONE" NOW REALLY DOES CHANGE BACK A user wrote in to say that after pinning a fixed town, switching back to "Follow my phone" did not change back. He was right, and it took two fixes. Amud now fetches your location the moment you tap it, instead of waiting until you next open the app. And when a fix cannot be got at all - ordinary enough indoors, or on battery saver - it no longer quietly keeps the pinned town's coordinates while telling you it is following your phone. It falls back to your phone's own last known position, and if even that is unavailable it says so plainly. That side of the screen now explains itself too, with the same numbered step the fixed-town side has always had. AMUD NO LONGER GUESSES YOUR TOWN Your zmanim never need a signal - they are worked out on your phone from your coordinates. Looking up what a place is CALLED does. Until now, when Amud had your position but could not look up its name, it printed the main city of your timezone: every phone in Britain said "London", whether it stood in Nottingham, Manchester or Golders Green. It now says "Your current location". WHEN A ZMAN DOES NOT EXIST, AMUD SAYS SO Far enough north in high summer the sun never sinks far enough below the horizon for nacht, the end of Shabbos or the end of a fast to happen at all. Those rows used to disappear with nothing said. They now explain themselves in words, and name the right zman - the heading used to say "No Nacht tonight" even on nights when nacht existed and only the end of Shabbos did not. Where the sun does not rise and set at all, the card says that too. Words, and no number. Where the sun does not set properly the poskim differ, so Amud will not invent a time and dress it up as a zman. It says what is missing and tells you to ask your rov. REMINDERS REACH FURTHER AHEAD The nightly reminders were running out about nine days ahead while slots sat reserved for events up to six weeks away. They now reach around eleven days, and nothing else lost its place in the queue. IF A REMINDER NEVER ARRIVES, IT IS USUALLY FOCUS A Sleep or wind-down Focus silences apps it has not been allowed, without telling you - and the Evening Shema fires after nightfall, which is exactly when such a Focus is running. Switch that reminder on and Amud now tells you so, and where to allow it. ALSO IN THIS UPDATE The small notes naming a depression angle now follow your nusach, so an Edot HaMizrach user no longer reads a row headed "Tzet hakochavim" with "Tzeis 8 degrees" printed underneath it. Longer place names are no longer cut off on the card. And on getamud.com, the times card no longer names a town it cannot know - it says "your current location" and shows the coordinates. The website has no geocoder, so after finding your position it was labelling it with the timezone's city - Nottingham and Manchester both read "London". • Far north: where the sun never sinks low enough for nacht or the end of Shabbos to happen, those rows no longer just vanish. Amud says so in words and tells you to ask your rov. It will not invent a time. • Earliest Maariv no longer disappears on a night with no nightfall - it shows plag. • The Krias Shema reminder no longer switches itself off on those nights. • getamud.com: the Before Shabbos sheet could print "null". Fixed. • No times have changed.

This update rewrites the zmanim card so that every line leads with what you do, and adds two new zmanim. It also carries everything from the previous update, which was never released. WHAT THE ZMANIM SAY Every row now leads with the action and keeps the zman's own name underneath it. "Mincha Gedola" is a fact about the sun; "Earliest Mincha" is the thing you opened the app to find out, and you should not have to translate one into the other at one o'clock. Nothing is lost - every name is still there, in smaller type - and every line follows your nusach, so Edot HaMizrach reads "Earliest Tallit and Tefillin" and "Last Arvit l'chatchilah". TWO NEW ZMANIM Earliest Tallis and Tefillin (Misheyakir), and Last Maariv l'chatchilah (chatzos halayla) - the time past which Krias Shema at night should not be left. CHOOSE YOUR OWN SHITAH New settings for Alos HaShachar, Misheyakir and Plag HaMincha. Every default is exactly what Amud already worked out, so no time moves unless you change it. WHICH WAY TO DAVEN The compass now answers in words - "East, leaning south" - with the degree underneath it, because a number from 0 to 360 tells most people nothing. The pill beside the settings gear shows the compass point as letters. And it gives a firmer buzz the moment you are facing Har HaBayis, so you can look up from the phone. FROM THE PREVIOUS UPDATE Whose zmanim these are. The card now names the place the times were worked out for, so a location left over from a trip can no longer read as fact. Mincha Ketana. An optional row: Mincha Gedola is the earliest Mincha is valid, Mincha Ketana is the l'chatchilah time to daven it. Switch it on under Settings. FIXES The Shema at night reminder is back. iPhone allows an app only a limited number of reminders at once, and the daily zmanim ones were quietly being crowded out by the rest. The latest time for Melava Malka was running about seven minutes early. It now uses the same reckoning of chatzos as the posek who gives the deadline. Netz, Mincha Gedola and Mincha Ketana were each being shown up to a minute earlier than they are.

Oraysa. The Daily Amud v'Chazara program joins the Limud Yomi list. One new amud a day Sunday to Thursday, and because the programme is Amud v'Chazara, the chazara is on every single line: yesterday's amud through the week, the week's first two blatt on Friday, and the last three on Shabbos. It works like every other cycle - progress bars, catch-up, reminders, Find Your Place, and a printable calendar for the whole year. Last Shacharis. Chatzos hayom now has a row in the zmanim list every day. Sof zman Tefilla is the deadline you aim for; chatzos is the one past which there is no Shacharis at all, only tashlumin at Mincha. It sits directly beneath its partner, on the card, on the Shabbos and Yom Tov sheet, and in the Lock Screen next-zman widget.

Two new things for anyone learning a daily limud. Find your place. Nobody remembers the date they started - they remember where they were. Next to "Select your start date" there is now "Find it by what you learned": search the cycle in English or Hebrew, tap the day you began, and your start date is set. Type "chullin 2", or "berachos" - Amud understands both spellings. Print a calendar. A whole year of any cycle, as a PDF you can put on a shul board or a fridge. The Bavli cycles print the classic wall sheet - a complete table per masechta, with the siyum date in the header and a tick-off box for every daf. The page-a-day cycles print a line-a-day year sheet, and Tehillim prints its monthly cycle on one page that never goes out of date. A calendar always covers a named year, Rosh Hashanah to Rosh Hashanah or January to December, so two people printing a month apart get the same sheet. Also in this update: every calendar in Amud now has an English date / Hebrew date switch; tapping a change in the day's summary jumps to the card that explains it; the compass needle is steadier; and Tikkun Chatzos now says exactly when it may be said and which shitah it follows.

Pick dates the Hebrew way. Every calendar in Amud - Jump to a date, and the Limud Yomi start-date and missed-day pickers - now has an English date / Hebrew date switch. On the Hebrew face you page through the Hebrew months and pick your date directly, leap-year Adars included. Amud remembers which face you prefer. The day's changes are now a table of contents: tap any line in the day's summary and Amud takes you straight to the card that explains it, marked with a gold ring. Tikkun Chatzos now spells out the full window - say it from chatzos until alos - names the opinion it follows, and only says "say now" once chatzos has actually passed. A tidier compass: the small mark that shows which way you are facing now sits just clear of the dial where it belongs, and the "Hold steady" button has proper air beneath it. Plus small fixes throughout, including date calendars that always fit the screen.

Tap a change, get the explanation. The summary at the top of the day has always told you WHAT changed. Now it takes you to the answer as well. Tap any line in that list and Amud scrolls straight to the card that explains it, then rings that card in gold for a second so your eye knows where it landed. Tonight's changes open the Maariv block on the way in, so you never land on a heading that is still folded shut. Also in this release: - Tikkun Chatzos reads more simply. The line now names the tikkun and says to say it at chatzos, with the time - the same sentence whatever hour you open the app. - A tidier compass. The small mark that shows which way you are facing was floating too high and landing on the words above the dial; it now sits just clear of the ring where it belongs. The "Hold steady" button has proper clear air under it.

A calmer, clearer compass, and a plainer Tikkun Chatzos. Which way to daven: a bigger, roomier dial. The needle no longer sits on top of the compass letters, the answer now reads above the dial rather than below it, and the needle glides smoothly as you turn instead of jumping. The settings gear and the compass are back in the corner of the day card at a comfortable size, and the date in the top bar is no longer cut off. Tikkun Chatzos now gives the exact time it may be said from, on screen and on the printed sheet, and names which chatzos it is following. It also no longer says "say now" before chatzos has arrived.

New: Which way to daven A small compass beside the settings gear shows you the direction of the Kodesh HaKodashim from wherever you are standing. Turn until the arrow points straight up and you are facing it. It is not east: from England the answer is about 114 degrees, from New York about 54. Three shitos to choose from inside the compass, each showing the bearing it gives for your own town. No compass in your phone? It shows you how to find the direction from the sun at chatzos instead, which needs no sensor at all. Also in this update: The printed Shabbos and Yom Tov sheet now carries every zman of the day, in time order: alos, netz, sof zman Krias Shema and Tefilla, chatzos, earliest Mincha, plag, shkia, nacht, when Shabbos ends, Rabbeinu Tam and Melava Malka. One page per day, guaranteed. A long Yom Tov with several limudim no longer runs off the bottom of the sheet. Tikkun Chatzos on the sheet is now the night the day came in on, sitting in its right place between Krias Shema at night and Krias Shema of the day. Your limudim now print on the sheet from the website too, not just from the apps. Marking today as missed in Limud Yomi now counts straight away, instead of waiting until tomorrow to appear.

- Melava Malka: the latest time to eat it (halachic midnight) now appears on Motzei Shabbos, on the zmanim card, in the Shabbos zmanim and on the printed Shabbos sheet. - Nacht is now shown every day in the zmanim card, the same time as Krias Shema at night. - Tikkun Chatzos now also appears on the printed Shabbos sheet, and clearly says which tikkun is the one to say now and until when. - Clearer Kiddush Levana wording: "can be said tonight", and the countdown no longer reads as two different times at once.

Sharper fast days, in the order you daven them. - Aneinu now has its own reminder at Mincha on every public fast, and Sim Shalom at Mincha (Ashkenaz/Sefard) now shows on Tisha B'Av too. - On Tisha B'Av, Shir shel Yom is flagged as said at Mincha (not Shacharis), leading the Mincha reminders. - The whole day now reads in davening order: Shacharis, then Mincha, then the fast, then Maariv, with Kiddush Levana last. - The widget keeps each change on screen until it can no longer be said (Shacharis until chatzos, Mincha until shkia, Maariv until alos). - Chatzos now appears in the zmanim on Tisha B'Av. - A pushed-off fast is now labelled clearly, e.g. "Tisha B'Av Nidcheh (Deferred)", with the Hebrew corrected. - Tikkun Chatzos now shows in the Before Shabbos preview too.

- New: Tikkun Chatzos. Turn it on in Settings and Amud shows the time for Chatzos and which tikkun to say - Tikkun Rochel and Tikkun Leah on days Tachanun is said, Tikkun Leah alone on days it isn't - following your nusach and timing. - The date now stays pinned at the top as you scroll, so you can always see which day you're looking at. - Fixed: exporting a backup now lets you pick where to save the file. The save screen no longer closed itself before you could choose a folder. - The fast-day Lock Screen countdown is steadier, and its on/off switch now takes effect straight away.
