It’s getting better, I guess?

It wasn’t too long ago that this app essentially didn’t work at all, but now it’s pretty decent. I actually like the UI and more minimal verbal guidance of the driving directions better than any other app (though I could deal with somewhat fewer “go past this light and at the next one…”. And I appreciate that you can see subway entrances in NYC now.

My issue is with biking directions. It’s constantly routing me down awful, busy roads and telling me to take three right turns to get to an address on a one-way street, when dismounting and walking a few feet down the sidewalk to it would make way more sense. When there are issues (like a road being stripped bare for re-paving), if you try to go off route (by taking a parallel street, for example) it will NEVER stop trying to route you back to the original plan. It’s very frustrating and disappointing.

Google Maps is ultimately orders of magnitude better in real-world navigation through a city, showing shortcuts through parks and plazas, up stairs, etc. I get that this is due in part to Apple’s privacy standards, not crowd-sourcing user route data. But despite trying to use Apple Maps as much as possible, I still end up going back to Google.

Actually difficult to use for Apple and glitchy

It seems like someone at apple thought they were smarter than the users and being helpful when it turns out the app can be a huge pain to use for anything but basic navigation. They made the address too sticky so that it is a real challenge to have the app forget that address so I can enter a new address. Forget about adding any stop you want along the way too. I cannot figure out how to enter what I want instead of the standard list of generic places apple allows. How do I go from A to B but stop at my friends house along the way? Lately, the app has too many occasions when it thinks I am off the road, literally off in the woods along the side of the highway, or going east when I am heading north and it gets confused telling me to go places that are completely wrong. All this happens in the middle of a trip not during some adjustments to it - pretty bad for such a smart system. I do like the newer features that track traffic but I hate that it tries to detour me around it automatically - I know that might be helpful BUT don’t do it unless I give permission!! There might be another reason I took that route and I can handle the traffic. Please do not think too much for me as a user and restrict what I can do or make choices without asking. Instead, give me the options and tools I need to solve problems, then be helpful with suggestions along the way.

Could I have a time lap to the past?

If you’re able to reply to this, please add a time war back we can go back into the past not to forget you can line back but work on New York City first because it has lots of buildings gotta get it first and not to forget when you go back to 2001 don’t forget about what I called the twin towers if you don’t know, I’m gonna put this on the top probably and guys I don’t know about this but I wanna be. slightly noticeable with this, but I’m kind of embarrassed when I post this because to keep this at the place there’s no way because for what I said that’s awareeeeee and this will probably give better improvements for the app and out of back time where it covers the decades don’t forget about the beginning of the 2000s and just do it New York and then go far back as you can like into the starting of the 1970s and by the way, don’t forget also add some stuff we’re pretty much you can also add time on the events which you can do 2001 with it. I’m not talking about the rest of it but who knows it’s a lot and for everyone to see this might just be crazy, but if you studied in science class, you would know that that wasn’t the cure for rabies it instead. Gone Downhill

I realize it could be my phone being older (12 pro), but about half the time I use maps, Siri can’t tell where I even am, and I either get placed five streets over or get stuck in the same spot, and my location doesn’t update in real time. So when you’re trying to get somewhere you’ve never been before and Siri can’t figure out how to navigate you like she’s supposed to, it doesn’t really work in you favor….

Secondly, if I hit the “X” button on an address, WHAT MAKES YOU THINK I WANT IT TO BE PULLED BACK UP? If someone clicks out of an address, they are DONE with it. Don’t pull it up and make me exit out of it five different times to get back to the main location search bar. It’s awful.

In addition to that, I HATE that the “fastest” directions automatically try to take you onto the Express Tollways, where they exist. I don’t mind toll roads, but I sure as heck am not going to pay $15 one way in Express Lane tolls just because Siri thinks that’s the fastest way. But I there’s no option to opt away from express lanes, it’s either you get all tolls, regular and express, or you get none at all. And it’s very misleading to actual travel time to show the “fastest” route be the one with express lanes. It didn’t use to do this ever. And it’s extremely frustrating. I am on the verge of using something else instead of Maps. Downloading Waze at the time of this review.

iOS 16 maps was a big improvement about time you put multiple stops in your mapping program

iOS 16 maps was a big improvement about time you put multiple stops in. However, the only reason why I haven’t given it a full stars is it needs a slight adjustment in the programming seems to work pretty good I like that you can send and correct information with photos and messaging. The only thing that I can see now that you need to do is a fuel optimizer, in which I mean you put in all your multiple stops and yes, you can switch them around if you want or you should be able to hit a button that allows it to go the fastest route or shortest route or best route for fuel optimization. If you do that then, or even a portion of that it would make it a lot better mapping program. The only other thing I could suggest which is kind of minor, but would be kind of nice is if you put in a system that you can turn on for high vehicles like big RVs that sit at 13 feet 6 inches high, basically allowing you to avoid low bridges and etc.. I don’t know if that’s possible for you I know I’ve seen it before another math in programs but that would be a nice touch. Otherwise all in all not a bad program. Keep up the good work. Apple.

Forced Re-Route Caused a long, 15 hr. Trip

Apple devs, make auto-reroute optional instead of hardcoding it into the app. You have no idea what chaos this caused for me. I was traveling from Tohatchi, New Mexico to Idyllwild, California. Apple Maps forced me to reroute when I reached Holbrook, Arizona. For the time I would have reached Phoenix, the traffic issue would have definitely resolved. The traffic issue was too far away to consider adding an auto reroute. This auto reroute had the effect of adding several needless hours to my already long, interstate trip. This was a huge distraction to my driving. I was not very well rested, to boot.

I was supposed to go to Phoenix and take the I-10 to Idyllwild. I can’t exactly stop the car on the side of the freeway, when there are semi trucks around me. I decided to keep going and trust the app. It cost me. I wish there was an option to turn off automatic reroute feature. Going to Idyllwild was only supposed to take a little over nine hours via Phoenix. I spent 15 hours on the road through Kingman instead, due to the auto rerouting feature.

Needless to say, I also got into a hit and run crash with a drunk driver in 29 Palms, California. I should have listened to my better common sense and taking the route to Holbrook, but when I’m on the rural freeway (woman traveling alone) and can’t look at the phone closely, I’d rather not have an app that auto-reroutes me. I will be using Google maps.

Mediocre

For me, it works as far as a simple destination goes. It’ll give me the exact same routes as Google Maps does, it’ll also send me into traffic and give me poor routes the exact same way Google does. It’ll announce turns to take either too early or too late. It forced a locational icon onto the map saying where I work, which would be okay except the icon is in the wrong spot. It’s in the middle of the freeway…. And it appeared by all accounts there’s no way to move the icon. The only way it seemed to respond was to report an issue, and report a wrong location. I didn’t even ASK for you to add this you just did it on your own in the background. I switched to Apple Maps because Google Maps is having issues and not working and they’re not taking care of it either! So how come when I open the app you instantly assume I work in the middle of the freeway and I can’t change the location of my own work?
The widget doesn’t do anything special either. Google shows me drive time (when it worked) and Apple just shows me the location on a mini map of you assuming my work is in the middle of a freeway and I’m not allowed to edit it.
There are so many bizarre little issues I just don’t get what you’re doing over there. Apple creates too many apps that don’t work and they’ve all got poor reviews.

Preferred Map app

Not sure why the Apple Maps app continues to have relatively poor reviews. I’ve used google maps and Waze over time and for several years after its release I avoided Apple maps because it was inaccurate, unreliable, and at times even dangerous. However, for the past couple years, I’ve used Apple Maps far more than the others. While it’s not perfect, neither is Google Maps or Waze. The Apple Maps UI is pleasant and easy to use, though search could be improved in terms of how to find things that are not near your current location. Transit directions are great and easy to follow and the new AR guidance for walking directions are super cool. The upgraded maps that has rolled out over the past few years have also dramatically improved the look of the app over Google Maps and Waze. I prefer the voice guidance as well, which seems to provide clearer guidance and instructions in most cases than other apps. Apple definitely still needs to continue to improve the app, but I am happy to say that it’s a great maps app to use on the iPhone and definitely one to consider now over Waze or google maps.

why do you hate me apple

i am not sure what i have done to offend the apple gods but maps WILL NOT LET ME LOOK UP ANYTHING. i will have full bars, from wifi and/or data, and yet when i attempt to type in a location, unless it is somewhere i have been before(and sometimes even then) nothing will come up until i hit search. and then once i hit search i get some sort of adjacent result. example: my first attempt. i type “boston ramen”. nothing as i type. i hit search. my one and only result is “bosso ramen tavern”. i am sure bosso ramen tavern is a lovely establishment, but i am also sure that it is not the only ramen spot in boston. my second attempt. i accidentally type “tamen boston”. nothing. search. “boston public garden”. attempt three. there is no attempt three. i paid the better part of a grand for this stupid phone and i have plenty of space on it and plenty of battery and the app doesn’t need updating and if the phone itself being a couple years old and a few updates behind is enough for this to happen every other time i try to find a restaurant, then all i have to say is this. a curse upon you. a curse upon you and a curse upon your creators and a curse upon your benefactors. a curse upon your profits and a curse upon your stocks and a curse upon whoever is currently in charge of this godforsaken app in particular. i wish you nothing but the worst.

Some ideas!

Absolutely love the work Apple has put into Maps. However, there are a few things I think they could add/improve! I am also a Google Maps and Waze user. Depending on my situation I will switch between all three but usually switch between Apple and Google Maps. My favorite thing about Google Maps is the face I can creat Guides or Lists for places I want to go or to plan routes on a trip. Apple lets you do this too, but it’s not as intuitive. I can make notes in Google Maps which is super helpful when I have a lot in one list and I don’t want to forget certain details about the location!

Another feature or set of features I think Apple could add is more detailed alerts when it comes to users adding an alert based off driving situations. I’m glad Apple implemented a way to alert other drivers of hazards on the road or police similar to Waze… But once again, it’s not very intuitive. you have three options and that’s to report a police officer, a crash, and a road hazard but none of those options have much detail like Waze has. Just think there is some room for growth!

Overall LOVE Apple Maps but there is always room to grow
