Fekkarrrrrrrr ,

This shouldn't be engrossing but it is.

The world building in general in all the Avernum games is fantastic. The missions lead you through a narrative that outlines culture, politics, and class struggle. The characters you play have no real back story to speak of, but that doesn't detract. Everyone you meet does. Each town is different. I love the rush missions in this game, and the sheer size of it. It really feels like I'm taking a vacation in this game, going to another world inspite or maybe because of the basic quality of graphics.

There is very little 3D here - it's smooth, but minimal. Even in battle, you are looking at a top down map with tiny characters. It's not quite 8bit but it feels delightfully retro. I think because of this, you mind makes up the difference and it engages your imagination more strongly than if the sceen was immersive.

I love these games to a fault.
