How It Works:

1. Set your desired backup schedule in the app
2. Turn off the default backup option in System Preferences
3. Let Backup Scheduler: Time Editor manage your backups

Pro Tip: Install our free Helper (from our website) for automatic backups and detailed statistics.

Schedule Examples:

1. "Start backup every 6 hours AND when idle for at least 5 minutes"
Backups occur every 6 hours, but only when the computer is idle for 5+ minutes.

2. "Start backup every 6 hours OR when idle for at least 5 minutes"
Backups happen every 6 hours OR when idle for 5+ minutes (potentially more frequent).

3. "Start backup: never and/or when idle for at least 10 minutes"
Backups only initiate when the computer is idle for 10+ minutes.

4. "Start backup every 1 day and/or when idle: never"
Daily backups, regardless of idle status.

5. "Start backup every 1 day and/or when idle for 3+ minutes" AND "Backup between 5pm and 10pm"
Daily backups between 5pm-10pm, if idle for 3+ minutes.

Note: Sleep mode backups require Power Nap support.

Frequently Asked Questions:

1. Where do I set up a new backup disk?
All disk settings are in System Preferences / Time Machine. Our app handles scheduling only.

Does Exactly What it Says it Does.

Follow the instructions, the App will ask you to download an Applescript that adds the service that makes it work properly, you can open that in the Editor that came with your Mac and see if it’s doing anything you don’t want. Beyond that and setup correctly? Fantastic. I’d rather pay $5 than spend a few hours writing my own method from scratch. My only complaint and I’m not docking stars for it, I’d like finer tuning or advanced tuning for when backups occur/stop. I’m running a server, during high load times, it’d be great to be able to set task priority %, or backups during low task %. Nitpicky stuff. Completely worth $5.

Backup when idle for X minutes does not work as expected

The biggest issue I have with Time Machine is high resource usage after awakening from sleep. Typically, multilple processes contend for resources while my Mac performs various houskeeping duties if I’ve stepped away for a while. I had hoped that Backup Scheduler would delay Time Machine activity until I had taken a break. It does not do this. As soon as the desktop appears after typing in my password Backup Scheduler is already banging away on my Time Capsule backup drive. Time Machine activity shows hundreds of megabytes being backed up, which leads me to believe that the not only does the “backup when idle” function NOT work on wakeup, but it can’t be working AFTER I take a break either. Otherwise there wouldn’t be that much stale data that requires refreshing since I last used the system.

Backup Scheduler seems to work OK for blocking the default hourly Time Machine schedule, but there are other ways to edit this schedule without purchasing Backup Scheduler.

WARNING: Doesn’t actually start backups; wants you to install non-App Store script

Ridiculous. This app doesn’t do anything more than pop up a reminder to manually start a Time Machine backup (pointless and something I can do without giving $5 to the developer), unless you install a script from a 3rd-party site, which is a big red flag: If a developer doesn’t want to incorporate something that essential into the actual App Store product, which is subject to Apple quality control and virus/malware screening, then something fishy is afoot. I’m not about to take that chance and — based on some of the bad reviews by those who did — it sounds like the offsite script may not even work properly. Extremely misleading and suspicious.

After purchasing, installing, and trying this bogus product, I am now extremely skeptical of the validity of all of the 5-star reviews posted. Now I just need to figure out how to pursue a refund, and report this scheme to Apple...
