Update 3.1.2 Fixes!

[As of July 13, 2021, the 3.1.2 update has fixed my iPhone 12 Pro screen, sound, and ad issues. The game is back to five stars! Thanks!]

As others have stated, the late-May update 3.0.2, which I assume was issued to be compatible with new iOS 14.6 tracking/privacy settings, has broken the game. In particular, receiving ads when I’ve paid for the ad-free version (despite deleting/reinstalling/restoring purchases). The biggest problem is the game doesn’t display correctly on iPhone 12 Pro/Max. Lots of unused display and everything looks lower resolution. I even changed settings to let the app collect data and track me thinking maybe that would fix things, but still not displaying correctly. It was a five-star game before the most recent update. Like others, I’ve submitted the issue to EA as well as this review. Hopefully, we’ll have a fully functional Bejeweled Classic before the end of the month.

Any app that starts with an ad is not a real app

When you launch a game, you don’t even get the title page with the name of the app all you get is an advertisement for another app that can’t be skipped If you accidentally go the the App Store thinking it would allow you to skip the ad, when you return to this game it restarts the ad. the ad lasts for literally 40 seconds before before it reveals a mostly obscured little x that is almost indistinguishable from the play again button. Then you get the title page where you can pick a game type. Then it loads another ad. Sometimes the same ad. This is not a game. It’s an ad generator and I’m filing a complaint with Apple to have this SPAM removed.

If I could give it negative stars for greed I would.

This is a terrible port of the classic flash games from Popcap from back in the 1900s. Now they are just raking in the ad revenue by forcing you to watch ads. And not just any ads, the long 30 second ads with the tricky and hard to find close box. I absolutely loved Popcap and I cannot express my dismay about their latest decisions to place so many ads in their game. I will be deleting this and installing any of the 6 million or so other games like it with less ads and more features.

What happened to this game?

What has happened? Bejeweled has always been one of my most beloved games and has been a go-to for me ever since the original version running on my palm pilot back in the early 2000s.

Yesterday I wanted to play a game of Butterflies and the layout of the app is totally different. (1) The pop up menu that expands from the bottom is now constantly on-screen in a “half-expanded” position, and (2) this causes the main game view to get reduced in size (to make room for the menu). Not to mention, having that menu always in the way is really annoying. (3) The size reduction of the game area affects resolution and image quality. (4) There are some new menu buttons (for example “game store”) which when clicked display an unreadable mix of improperly sized images, text and buttons. Then there is “restore purchases” which appears to do nothing at all. This is just two examples.

I suppose I should have left raving reviews years ago when this app was king of games but I didn’t. Here I am now, though, and the app is a mess. I hope it can be restored to its former glory soon. The current state of the app is not one I “will get used to” and carry on using anyway.
