This is a free sneak preview of Betwixt — a choose-your-own-adventure app that helps you find clarity, courage and self-insight.
We’ve taken some of the most effective tools for self-reflection and built them into an immersive experience inspired by Myst and Lord of the Rings.
Betwixt is an epic, magical journey of self-discovery. You begin as a “seeker” in a dreamlike world that responds to your emotions and makes real what you think. Your mission is to escape, but to do that, you must connect with yourself.
Mental wellness shouldn’t be a chore. So we made it epic.
Betwixt is a fantastical escape where reality and imagination collide.
Turn the voice in your head into a powerful ally.
Co-create the dream world.
Be the hero and the author of your own brave new story.
A FANTASY ESCAPE WITH REAL-LIFE IMPACT
Betwixt uses powerful wellness tools and processes from positive psychology, cognitive theory, affective science, expressive writing, and a range of therapy styles.
The project involved external consultation with Dr Sachin Shah and Dr Stephen Kaar, as well as the Games for Emotional and Mental Health Lab in the Netherlands, along with researchers and experts from universities in the U.K. and U.S.
“Betwixt manages to harness the insights of the best mental-health scholarship and practice to create a fantastical space of interactive storytelling, a space which scholars have shown enhances users’ reflective capacities and their sense of agency – a necessity for mental-health wellbeing in the twenty-first century.”

"Addictive in a good way. It's been only a day really, but I feel more in control. I feel I have more discipline and it's easier to motivate myself."

Betwixt may cause you to confront some emotionally sensitive areas of your life, but it is not a replacement for medical or therapeutic treatment, and it is not a crisis service. If you feel in need of urgent help from a trained professional while playing, you can click “SOS” at the top of the page to find external links and numbers for services in your area.

Ratings and Reviews
I do not often write reviews for apps… in fact, I think this is only the second or third one I’ve ever written, but I believe this app is important enough to break my silence.
You need to try this app. You need to experience these dreams, and listen for the Voice to guide you in your waking hours too. You will have a greater understanding of yourself and you will learn some tips and tricks to help you in your life.
I found my heart physically hurting as dream four ended, in the best way possible.
The ONLY thing I have to add that isn’t entirely positive is one simple desire: I wish you could read a transcript for the meditation too. Sometimes I don’t process words being said to me, and I wish I could read them (even if that isn’t exactly meditation).
Amazing Concept, Amazing Execution
I’ve been enthralled with Betwixt and the idea of using storytelling as a path to self-examination and therapy ever since seeing an AMA by the developers on Reddit more than a year ago. The visual and auditory style create a wonderful, all-encompassing experience to help you get into the story. I was involved in early testing for the content, but it’s great to have everything organized in one app. I’m very excited to see where the story takes me, and what understanding I’ll gain along the way.
Won’t help the people it needs to help.
This is self help for people who think they need it. If you don’t think you need it, this is fantastically annoying.
I got 10 minutes in to chapter 1 wondering when I would have any actual agency. There’s decision points, but no agency. Self help is literally useless without volitional aspiration guided through agenentic recognition.
Digital games have no ability to satisfy this requirement. So, it’s cute, but a doomed project like every other ‘therapist in an app’. Interpretation of salience landscaping and relevance realization process cannot be achieved in digital format. Verbal holography fails to release the individual from their psyche, and thus this modality will only work with people who are need a vocabulary to adequately address their selves, but won’t take them beyond that, except as spiritual bypassing. 🤷🏻
