A 3:2 photo printed at 5x7 loses 6.7% of its long edge. At 8x10 it loses 17%. Only 4x6 keeps all of it. All 18 sizes carry a source. "I ordered an 8x10 and the person at the edge was gone." Everybody does this once. The reason is simple: the shape your camera records and the shape of the paper are not the same, so something has to go. This shows you what, before you order. ■ What each size cuts off (free) Pick the aspect your photo actually is -- 3:2, 4:3, 1:1 or 16:9 -- and every one of the 18 sizes reports how much it takes. For a 3:2 photo: - 5x7 ... 6.7% - 8x10 ... 17% - 11x14 ... 15% - 16x20 ... 17% - 4x6 ... nothing If the paper is squarer than the photo, the long edge goes. If it is longer, the short edge goes. The app says which. ■ It separates "almost" from "exactly" 4x6 in is the only size here that is genuinely 3:2. Japan's KG size (102x152mm) is 1:1.490, which loses 0.65%. Wide 6-kiri loses 0.16%. Neither is visible in a print, so both read as barely any crop -- but neither is called no crop, because that would not be true. L and 2L, the two most common Japanese papers, are neither 3:2 nor 4:3. They have their own ratio, so they always take a little. ■ 18 print sizes (free) Thirteen from the Japanese photo-paper system (mashikaku, DSC, L, hi-vision, KG, panorama, DSCW, 2L, 6-kiri, wide 6-kiri, A4, 4-kiri, wide 4-kiri) and five inch-based (4x6, 5x7, 8x10, 11x14, 16x20). Every one carries millimetres, its inch name, its ratio and a source. ■ Mat window dimensions, in millimetres (free) For people who cut their own. Choose the reveal and the app gives you the opening. Custom-cut mats use 1/8 in; the mat that comes with a ready-made frame uses 1/4 in. An 8x10 photo with a custom reveal wants a 7 3/4 x 9 3/4 in opening. ■ The framing conventions are here too (free) Bottom weighting: equal margins at the top and sides, wider at the bottom. The optical centre sits above the geometric one, and this has been the correction since the nineteenth century. Japanese frames distinguish outer, inner and window dimensions, which is also written down here. Where a figure is trade consensus rather than a published standard, it says so. ■ Framing preview (free) Six styles: white mat, black edge, polaroid, film, soft, none. Export aspect is yours to choose. ■ Pro (one-time purchase, not a subscription) Removes the watermark and exports at 300 dpi for the paper you chose (150 dpi free). A4 comes out at 2480 px across, 8x10 at 2400 px. The size is derived from the paper, not from a multiplier. Everything above is free. ■ How it is built Works offline. Photos never leave the device.
