Description

decentralized identity

A BrightID is a personal identifier that allows you to receive rights and benefits based on your ability to prove that you're a unique person.*

Unlike a government identifier such as a Social Security Number, a BrightID is self-issued and verified by close friends or relatives. Personal data is not shared with a central organization.

To become verified and receive a BrightID score, make connections and form groups with the people you already know well. Groups are usually small (3-10 people) and are used only for verification. To learn more, read the BrightID whitepaper: https://www.brightid.org/whitepaper .

Your BrightID has an associated score which represents your likelihood of being a unique person in the network. BrightID holders join groups and make connections to increase their scores.

*To see which organizations are participating in BrightID benefits, visit the BrightID website at https://www.brightid.org

PRIVACY

The name and photo you enter in BrightID are only shared with people in your personal connections list. Your name and photo are not stored or used by BrightID outside of your device.

Pretty cool proof of concept!

Dropping two stars because

1. I don’t believe it’s reached it’s true potential tbh! What’s the point of connecting and seeing mutual contacts etc if you can’t also include some info like a bio or links to how to get in touch? Feels like this POC app should basically be a Rolodex :)

2. Not enough info on privacy (not even in the whitepaper). Can other people tap on my connections and see all my connections? Or do they only see the ones we have in common? Can other people see the names of my groups and who is in the group? Bad idea to have “inside joke” group names?

3. No settings to change your display name, delete your account, make a new account, etc. Once you’re logged into the app, it’s just stuck on that one home screen. You can only tap on the buttons you see. It feels broken in terms of standard app design. You expect to see a meta-menu of some kind.

Garbage

Trying to use this for gitcoin passport, one of the least user friendly apps I’ve ever seen one of the clearest examples of something designed by tech nerds that haven’t left their room or interacted with normal people in years. 👎
