Take a deep breath. That phrase greets you whenever you open Calm. It’s both a call to action and a defining feature of the app’s approach to meditation: You’re going to get through this, and all you need to start is a moment. In the increasingly crowded field of apps for meditation and mindfulness, Calm stands out for its ease of use and attention to (soothing) detail.

  • This app has completely changed my life

No, I’m not exaggerating. I was severely depressed. Grieving. Diagnosed with anxiety at age 8. The only thing that’s ever really helped me is DBT, which is based on mindfulness— which is strengthened through meditation. I got Calm do strengthen my DBT skills, but it’s gone beyond that. I’m learning more about myself. I’m unlocking memories. I’m learning how to forgive myself. I’m learning how to be present, all the time. I deleted all my social media apps and distractions and I just use Calm all day now. I love the music for focus, I love the daily move— mindful ways to be more connected to your body, and curated stretches for specific needs. I love the Masterclasses (only wish there were more of them!) I love the Courses— I’m on my third round of the 7 Days of Gratitude and 7 Days of Happiness. There just isn’t a downside to this app. There are so many tools, SOS meditations, soothing voices that feel like they really care, and the SLEEP STORIES!!! they are so good, sometimes I listen to them while I’m cleaning the house or making my breakfast. Just soothing background noise— the storylines are loose and playful so it doesn’t matter if you miss anything. The soundscapes are probably what I utilize for the longest periods— Miss Honeys Garden from Matilda gave me the best nap of my life, and I don’t even take naps! As you can see, I can talk for hours about the Calm app. Hire me as a representative because this is a product I truly care about

  • Wonderful Meditation App

    Mayfforce

I really love this app. I tried a few other meditation apps before trying Calm, but I didn't like them. I love the Calm meditations. They are partially guided and offer wonderful advice on so many topics, such as self esteem, not responding to thoughts and emotions, compassion, procrastination, kindness, and so many others. They have helped me so much, and I feel my emotions balancing out, and I will pause and take a breath before responding to something that upsets me. In addition to series of different types of meditations, for the past year they also have been offering a Daily Calm, which are wonderful. And Tamara's voice is so soothing. If I know I am going to be in an upsetting situation, I re-listen to the meditation on non-reactivity to emotion. It helped me get through giving my mother's eulogy. I know I have become a calmer, more focused and better person because of these meditations. This is a great app. I am adding to this review because I recently heard on a tv show that someone created a new meditation app with different meditation leaders because she said that people got bored listening to the same person doing all the meditations and then would stop meditating. My reaction was that this person had never listened to the Calm app and to Tamara. Tamara's voice is so soothing and inviting, I could listen to her every day for the rest of my life, and I hope she never stops doing the Calm meditations. She is so great. I highly recommend the Calm app.

  • Like therapy in my pocket!

I have suffered from severe panic disorder, GAD, depression, and OCD since age 12 (I am 30 now). I have been in therapy since then, but I am only able to afford it on a biweekly basis, when in reality I need support weekly if not more. My therapist recommended this app to me while in the midst of a relapse last year, and I downloaded it figuring if I didn’t like it I could just cancel after the free trial. I didn’t expect much. This app is a literal GODSEND for people struggling with mental illness. The 7 Days of Calming Anxiety and 21 Days of Calm have been lifesaving programs for me. I repeat them as needed and they are a great supplement to my regular therapy sessions! I feel immediately so relaxed after practicing them, even if I was in the midst of a 5 alarm panic attack right before that. At night and on weekends when I don’t have access to a mental health professional, or in between sessions, this is a lifesaver. It’s like having therapy in your pocket. Not only is Tamara’s voice incredibly soothing, but she takes the time to actually explain anxiety and how it works, which makes me feel less alone or less silly and reassured me when I’m feeling crazy bodily symptoms. For people saying that it’s expensive: I understand 80 dollars a year is not something all of us have, especially in times like these, but when you really think about the cost of therapy per year, this is a much more affordable and helpful option in a pinch. Best money I’ve ever spent, especially during uncertain times like these.

  • A fantastic tool that could be utilized to help people like myself

I am a recovering addict and meditation & rekindling my relationship with God during my meditation was pivotal to my success in recovery & the good ole 12 steps basically keep people on such a long guilt trip about what they did when they were an addict & I never thought in a mil years that phone apps would help me. I got off of everything a bit more roguely than the 12 steps because I had pending criminal charges and in order to get the charges dropped I was ordered to a year long intense mental health court and it’s been the best thing f that ever happened to me since I lost everything I owned and then some so these apps really work & it would be nice if you might mention AA or N.A. so your app pulls up for them because they don’t teach you anything about God really because they refer to my God as a “higher power & it took me several months of outpatient before I really learned the purpose of meditation and how people who aren’t addicts can most definitely benefit because if I would’ve know about this app I wouldn’t be trying to figure it out from folks who know less about it than I did so you guys could save someone’s life and probably many if you wouldn’t mind me showing it to some of the folks in the mental health court because the meditation keeps me grounded and I can meditate now when things get out of hand where 2 years ago it would’ve been just another great reason to get high and not keep an inventory of myself. Please get it out there to the recovery community! Thanks & God Bless!

  • Calm has changed my life 😌

I won’t make this too dramatic. I live a good life and am generally a happy person, and still I always felt like I was carrying so much stress (and honestly for no reason better than anyone else). Despite my attempts to lower stress through exercise, a healthy diet, and time outdoors, I always found those techniques to be short-term solutions (I still do all the above in tandem with Calm by the way). I finally tried Calm after hearing and reading such positive reviews. Calm has not only met but exceeded my expectations. It definitely takes a personal commitment, but carving out even just 10 minutes for the Daily Calm has completely altered my mindset in just a few weeks. In few instances do I now use the word “stressful” to describe my day. Taking stock of my daily feelings and thoughts through a quick 1-minute reflection is enough for me to get in touch with what I’m most anxious about or grateful for. And then the meditations themselves are enjoyable, plentiful and highly effective! The quality is exceptional as well. I absolutely love the narrators, the categories (including bedtime stories, soundscapes, music, and traditional meditations), and the overall peace of mind that comes with this wonderful program. $70/year is so worth the price! Of course Calm is just the tool. You’re the one who will have to come to the table with an open mind and a ready heart willing to do the work, but doing so will yield tremendous value! The world will be a better place if everyone took 10 minutes for the Daily Calm. Thank you to this wonderful team for changing my life in such a small bit meaningful way every day!

  • So calming (I’m guessing that’s why it’s called calm)

So I’ve only just turned nine but I have trouble falling asleep at night. Not because I’m worried or anxious or anything but my mind races with thoughts. I like to read for a while at night because I heard it was relaxing but when I put it down to fall asleep but I can’t because I get caught up in the story. I’m not saying no one should read at night. I just have a lot of trouble falling asleep. My mom got this app. (I don’t really know why because I’m not a lot of trouble but on the other hand my brother really is.) And I kept seeing ads for it so when this pandemic started I just tried it. The pandemic really got me off schedule. When we were still in school waking up at 6:45 AM was easy cause I was able to fall asleep at 9:00 PM but now during the pandemic we were able to wake up at 9:00 AM and I wouldn’t fall asleep till really late. Anyway enough about me more about the app. Your probably thinking this review is trash but just wait I’m gonna talk about the app. So the app is amazing even without the premium subscription. I started a while ago so you can take my word for it. I loved this app the second I started it but day after day I used it and grew to love it so much. My very first one was taking breaths and focusing and your breathing and just your breathing. I was trying to fall asleep that night but couldn’t but after I did that right when my head hit the pillow I was asleep. This is the best calming meditation app you could own. Don’t delete it if you didn’t like your first one. Try another and another I know you will love it. Get this app. You will have no regrets.

  • Yes YOU!

When a person is raised a certain way that becomes the norm to them. Children learn what they live! I’m writing this review for anyone out there that was raised around drugs, alcohol, lying, stealing, cheating, being ridiculed & made fun of, endured any physical, sexual, or mental abuse. You did not get hurt and broken in one night. I am here to tell you, YOU ARE IN FULL CONTROL OF YOURSELF.❤️ It’s time to take the reins of your mind, body, & soul back. The more you unplug from the hurtful worldly things like seeking love, acceptance, approval from others on social media, it may be shopping or indulging in anything you know in your heart is too much and ultimately can only bring you temporary happiness. I am a caregiver and first learned of mindful meditation while quietly sitting in the corner of the therapist room while my client whom battles with mental illness, anxiety, & depression was having a session. I asked the therapist to please print an extra copy for me as well on the basic steps of mindful meditation. Soon after I seen and then heard an add about the Calm app. I downloaded it & did the 7 day free trial. That was not enough, so yes I’ve paid for a year subscription & it was $ well spent. I now have peace in the palm of my hand wherever I go. I can put my earbuds in and search any thoughts/feelings I may be struggling with. The more you take the courageous stand to stop any of the toxic things in your life by removing, deactivating, or deleting them. Then yes YOU will learn to live a contagiously healthy, happy, & peaceful life! Thank you Calm,❤️🙏=✌️😊

  • Sleep, anxiety, & life saver all in one app

    CaylieHan

Honestly, I had come to a point in my life where I insomnia and anxiety were at an all time high , I was on anxiety meds, sleep meds, anything they could do to try & get my anxiety and insomnia under control & even when the pills weren’t really helping, I decided to try this app out because even doctors had recommend it, while yes- price tag can seem like a lot, BUT I used this one night while my anxiety was setting in and I was asleep half way through the sleep story and when I woke in the morning I was in disbelief. Nothing, I mean nothing had helped me until I found this app. The meditation & sleep stories are amazing. I am so grateful for this app. Now, the only reason I didn’t give it 5 stars would be due to a recommend I have for the creators, they should create a watch or something that can track your sleep & in the morning provide meditations, music, sleep stories that reflected how you slept the night before. For example, if someone woke up a lot, or of people were waking up frequently and having a hard time going back to sleep & maybe making suggestions for a meditation they could choose that one as more personal, or for anxiety with sleep or sleeplessness, things like that. I don’t know that would be my only recommendation, but overall and amazing app that’s worth the price.

Dear calm, I have had your app since my middle school years. I’ve got to say, your app was AMAZING with 15 sleep stories and 2 and 1/2 meditations, this wasn’t a problem for me because I also use headspace. Yes, they're your competition but I wasn't choosing sides. Anyways, over time you guys added feature that you really focused on for 2 weeks at a time and just gave up on it. Next, you decreased the amount of sleep stories which was ha a huge problem for me because I was NOT getting enough sleep to keep my grades up. It got so bad that I stole my mother's phone just to sleep (she Had the Premium subscription). So I was like, ”ok, I'll just use headspace ONLY for sleep and calm for meditation. Then, you took away the 7 days of calm AKA: YOUR MAIN TRIAL AND ONLY TRIAL MEDITATION LEFT after you premiumfied the 7 days of something (forgot). I mean like BRU, I have other options. I started using headspace which is a great alternative if you don't have much money. I recommend bringing back some stuff from premium and reduce the price. To counteract this, put one 15 second ad at the beginning. Of every session of meditation for people without premium. Therefore, there is more than one reason to get it and it's CHEAPER. That's a win-win situation. I hope you come to the right decision. Whatever it is, I probably wouldn't stop using the app. Thank you for your time.

  • Lots of options, but too few voices

    AsteroidFrenzy

What i like best about this app in the way it combines many mindfulness and calming tools in one place: guided meditation, relaxing sounds and images, bedtime stories, inspirational quotes, spiritual & self-help instruction and more. I can always find something to match my mood and available time. I came to the app for meditation, but I’ve found that content the least useful and diverse. Most of them are guided by the same woman, and I don’t find her voice relaxing, especially the sleep meditations which are so distracting they never work for me. The rest are guided by middle-aged White men. The content creation in this app has a serious diversity problem. They’re also organized by issue, not time, which I find frustrating when I waste valuable minutes trying to find a right-sized meditation for a short break I’ve carved out of work. All of the issues are potentially helpful, and if you’re only looking for anxiety or pain relief focused meditation, for example, and don’t care if it’s 20 minutes when you only have five, this structure will probably work better for you. I’ve resumed using other apps for meditation. My favorite thing in Calm are the sleep stories. I was a skeptic but they really work. I love all the different readers and subjects. Freema Agyeman’s story is my current favorite. I also like Matthew McConaughey, which is amusing since I’m not a fan of his acting. His voice work here is fabulous tho! I appreciate the refreshing of new story content and wish that happened in the meditation section as well.
