Candra

An almanac of sacred time

Free · Designed for iPad. Not verified for macOS.

Candra is a calendar and a journal in one, for people who keep their days by more than one calendar. FIVE CALENDARS, ONE DAY • Weton: the seven-day week and the five-day pasaran, with neptu • Javanese: day, month, year and taun • Chinese (Imlek): lunar date, zodiac animal and element • Hijri and Gregorian • The moon on every day: phase and how much is lit • Tap any day to read it in every calendar at once, or switch the whole app to the calendar you think in, its own months and years THREE WAYS TO LOOK • The day, as a tear-off calendar sheet: the date very large, and every calendar's name for it around it • The month, with a dot on every day that has a reminder • The year, twelve months at a glance A TOOL FOR EACH TRADITION • Bazi (八字): the four pillars of any moment, anywhere, with solar terms worked out to the minute from the sun, true solar time, ten gods, hidden stems, nayin and luck pillars. Where schools disagree you choose, and the chart says whose tables it follows. Nothing you put in is saved unless you write the chart to your journal • Pranata mangsa: the Javanese farming seasons as a wheel through the year • Lintang Jawa: Waluku, Lumbung and the other stars the seasons were read by, on tonight's sky • Prayer times: the five prayers on a 24-hour dial, with a countdown to the next. In Indonesia as the Ministry of Religious Affairs reckons them; elsewhere by the convention your mosque follows • Hilal: the young crescent at sunset after the new moon, weighed against MABIMS, wujudul hilal, Odeh and Yallop. Astronomy only: it never declares a month begun • The ephemeris: where the sun and the moon stand now, through a day, a month or a whole year • The planets: where each stands tonight, the planetary hours of the day, and their old lore • A star map: every star you can see from where you are, tonight or any night, found by name • Light, for photographs: golden and blue hours, where the sun and moon rise and set, the Milky Way, meteor showers and eclipses, the days the sun lines up with a landmark, and a compass set to true north A JOURNAL KEPT BY DAY • Entries under categories you make, each in its own colour: dreams, observances, occasions, a plant log, anything • Tags for finer sorting • Markdown: bold, italic, lists, headings, footnotes • An optional geotag, rounded to about 100 metres SEARCH BY ANY CYCLE • Find what you wrote by category, tag or word, or by any cycle of any calendar: every entry on Kliwon, every full moon, every Malam Jumat, every month of Sura • Count the evening as the next day, at sunset or at six, as Javanese and Islamic reckoning do • See what you found as a list, or laid on a month or a whole year, so patterns show A PRACTICE TIMER • Time a sitting, a fast or a vigil with a stopwatch or a timer, or count by touch, like prayer beads • When it ends, write it into the journal under a category, ready for your notes, or let it go REMINDERS THAT FOLLOW YOUR CALENDAR • Every weton, pasaran or weekday; the same day each Javanese, Hijri or Chinese month or year; every full moon • Or by the sun: at sunrise, sunset, the golden or blue hour, or a planet's hour, worked out again for every day • They keep coming with the app closed YOURS, AND ONLY YOURS • No account, no ads, no tracking • Everything stays on your iPhone or iPad as plain Markdown files • Export the whole journal whenever you like • Pick your place by name or on a map, offline, rounded to about 11 km • Optional sync through a GitHub repository you own ON YOUR IPHONE AND IPAD • Widgets on the lock and home screens, with the day in every calendar and the moon • A practice under way in the Dynamic Island • On the iPad, upright or on its side A manual in the menu shows every feature on its own screen. Dark and light, upright or on its side. English and Indonesian. Looks too good to be true? Perhaps. Or perhaps I'm just tired of ads everywhere. No ads, no tracking, nothing sent to me, ever. At least here, you are NOT the product.

THE I CHING, A NEW TOOL UNDER THE CHINESE CALENDAR • Cast a hexagram with the yarrow stalks or three coins, each with the odds the old texts give it, or enter a cast made elsewhere line by line • Read it in our own edition: the Chinese with its pinyin, our English, and beside them Wilhelm's German (1924) and Legge's English (1882) • The changing lines glow, and the reading turns to the hexagram the cast becomes • Open any of the sixty-four from Read, by number or by its two trigrams • Save a cast to the journal, and copy any page of the reading as text • The book's Indonesian is still to come; until then the English is shown MORE WAYS TO WRITE IN THE JOURNAL • Checklists, with a box you tick by touching it, even while reading • Numbered lists that count on as you go, highlighted words, and a divider • Links to a web page, to a day, or to another entry chosen from that day's entries. A link keeps the words you chose, and one whose entry has moved or gone says so: nothing is rewritten behind your back THE FULL READING OF A DAY, REDONE • The day's moon draws itself at the top, beside the date and its phase • The calendars follow in groups, what matters first and the rest quietly under it, with the Chinese date and the bazi's three pillars last • Home closes it SMALLER THINGS • Save takes you back when there is nothing to save, so there is always a way out while the keyboard is up • Colours are chosen on two wheels: the calendar at the left, its scheme at the right FIXES • A damaged entry, category or tag file is set aside instead of stopping the journal; one bad reminder no longer empties the list • Sync is safer: entries pulled by an interrupted sync show at once, a change saved during a sync is never overwritten, and an entry changed by a sync while you edit it keeps your words beside it • Reminders keep their notifications when the app and the background scheduler run close together • A moon phase that fell just before midnight is no longer shown as today's; under true solar midnight, the late zi hour takes the next day's stem • Deleting Candra now removes its GitHub token, and exported files are cleared once shared or saved • In the calendar picker, the last card tapped wins
