Description
Let your computer do the work while you watch the eclipse
This program will allow a compatible Canon camera to capture the events of the eclipse with the proper exposures and timing. The user is required to provide the coordinates AND IS REQUIRED TO PROVIDE CORRECT TIME. The program then takes over scripting what photo is required when. It also assists in focusing. It will operate with either a telescope or a lens.
This App is rated 17+ since an adult should be operating the camera during an eclipse. Adults should review the important safety information on the support URL before pointing a camera at the sun.
What’s New
Version 2.0.1
CaptureEclipse 2.0 is a major upgrade to the version many of you used in April. The full list of changes is on https://almadenobservatory.net/CaptureEclipse, but here is a summary.
- Completely redesigned the TestDelay to make it more robust, to provide more accurate diagnostics, and to not be confused if the camera contains test simulations.
- Provided more comprehensive error messages
- Provide optional background download of images during script execution. It will also allow the user to download all camera images when the script is not running.
- Special support for most R Series Cameras - Selected models of the R Series (e.g. R8) allow more exposures to occur during the bursts by actively managing the shutter mode. R Series cameras can now be used with a telescope.
- redesigned partial generator to allow 1% increments
- will do a "best effort" on cameras that do not have a sufficient max shutter speed. Note for the R8 it is more clever as noted above.
many other improvements
Ratings and Reviews
I never write product reviews, but ...
I spent months trying all kinds of way to capture lots of exposures during last Thursday's total solar eclipse off the coast of Australia.
I found CaptureEclipse a few weeks ago, and used it last week with excellent results.
Highly recommended.
Great app. And highly appreciated. One question
I'm grateful that you have created and brought this to the public for use. Sincerely appreciated. It will be automating my main camera during the upcoming eclipse.
One thing I cannot seem to get going - I would like to timelapse the partial phases as well, and it doesn't allow below 5% in the script. Any reason why I cannot set it to 1% for example?
Camera: Canon R7.
Thanks!
Developer Response ,
Version 2.0 will support capture of the partial eclipse at 1%. That required a bit of redesign. The TestFlight of this version will be available summer of 24. It will also provide better support for your R series camera
Embargo
The author made his software unavailable two weeks before the 2024 eclipse, citing the reason that it would be too little time for anyone to make use of it. Not only do I find making distant assumptions about my aptitude extremely arrogant, but it also caused me a lot of headache while I was planning my eclipse day. I would like to reward the author's kind concern about my capabilites with my equally kind review of his software.
