CodeFootprint is a macOS local change tracking app built for independent developers.
Core capabilities
1. Track file modification traces
2. Review file timelines and diff content
3. Store history in the project’s .codetrace folder or in a local storage path you choose
4.Export trace files
5. Local first by default, with no server upload
What is recorded by default
1. Text based code, config, script, and project files such as swift, js, ts, py, java, go, rust, html, css, json, yaml, xml, md, txt, sql, and sh
2. Files without extensions when they are not excluded by ignore rules
3. Special filenames such as Makefile, Dockerfile, Podfile, .env, and .gitignore
4. Direct deletion events during monitoring. When content from before deletion is already available locally, the app can preserve that content for later review
What is not recorded by default
1. Edits that were never saved to disk
2. History from before the project folder was selected
3. Excluded binary, media, archive, document, and database types such as png, jpg, mp4, mp3, pdf, docx, zip, dmg, db, and sqlite
4. Files inside ignored directories such as .git, node_modules, dist, build, DerivedData, and .codetrace
5. Backup style filenames that contain the backup timestamp pattern or end with .backup
6. Content that cannot be read as UTF 8 text
