Description

Powerful tool that solves real world color mixing problems with ease.

Color mixing in the real world is often counter-intuitive and is completely different from the RGB model used in the digital world. In the RGB model, to mix orange you need red and green but in the real world, you actually need the red and yellow paint to get the color.

ColorMixer is here to help to solve the real world color mixing problems using its unique subtractive color model. It is able to simulate real-world color mixing and more importantly, it can "unmix" any given color into a combination of mixing colors.

The app also features a custom made color picker that allows you to pick colors from variable sources including a color wheel, color values in RGB, CMYK or HSL model, an image from your gallery or camera and your custom color table.

There are 3 basic modes in this app, "Unmix", "Mix A + B" and "Convert A to B". With "Unmix", you select a color from the color picker and the app will resolve it into a combination of prime colors. With "Mix A + B", you select 2 colors and the app shows the result of mixing them together. With "Convert A to B", the app gives you a list of color you need to add to convert one color into another.

There is also an expert mode where you can complete all of the above functions in one single UI.

In the mix composition screen, you can change the mixing ratios by tapping on the left or right side of the color card. You can also add new colors to the mix with the + button on the bottom. Any change to the mix will update the mixing result in real-time.

Needs more development.

So far so good, but it’s missing quite a bit. I’m using this to visualize which colors I need to make the perfect hair dye color. Definitely needs more color options, especially a “make your own” color from a color wheel. It’s hard to find specific colors. For example, the color I want has magenta in it. So, I want to see which colors magenta is composed of. I can’t find a pure magenta on the color choices. Or maybe the app assumes it’s a primary color? Don’t know. This app would be perfect and so helpful if it could keep the chain going. Will be waiting for an update!

Developer Response ,

Thanks very much for your review.
To select an arbitrary color, tap on the top color box to open the color picker and from there you can choose color from the color wheel or use slider to control color values in RGB, CMYK and HSL color models.
Magenta is a prime color, theoretically pure magenta cannot be mixed from other color but you can mix it with other colors to create different shades of it.
We are working on a UX refactoring to make it more intuitive to use and the next version after that will include picking color from image or camera. Thanks very much for your support and please stay tuned for future updates!

Barely Usabale

I bought this to get access to the custom mix/unmix feature.

When unmixing a color, it requires you to pick 4 colors from your library. This may result in weird combinations or not a complete match at all.

I have hundreds of colors in my library and I would rather the app be able to choose the best colors in it to come up with the least combinations to achieve the target color.

The color picker using the image selector is also barely usable. Pinching and other gestures don’t seem to register correctly, intermittently at best. Picking the desired color in an image is almost unusable because it just so hard to get the target circle in the correct zoom level and position.

This app has a lot of potential, specially with the added hobby colors.

Suggestions, in addition to the mix and color pick issues above:
1. Please add the ability to add the entire hobby color range, or multiple brand ranges, as unmix colors. I can always go out and buy the missing colors if it helps get a better mix.
2. Add Ammo by Mig and Citadel to the color library. There are a lot of other brands, but with these two you will have a larger percentage of the market.
3. Please fix your website. The domain ideamats.com is parked and users have no way to ask for your support, other than writing a review.

Don't be discouraged by negative reviews

I usually scroll by if an app doesn't have 4.5+ stars. I almost did that with this app, but I'm so glad I didn't. It has so many useful features to better understand color, color relationships and paint mixing. This app is invaluable for artists, painters, photographers, cake decorators, designers, students and just anyone who wants to learn more about how colors relate. Try it out. You won't regret it!
