A decibel meter is a device which measures sound pressure to determine how intense sounds are, measuring in decibels. Decibels are a logarithmic scale based on the sensitivity of the human ear. Prolonged exposure to sounds over 85 decibels can lead to hearing loss, making measurement of decibel levels important for people who work in noisy environments so that they know when they need to protect their ears. For a frame of reference, normal conversation occurs between around 40 and 60 decibels, depending on who is talking. A firecracker is about 140 decibels, and a jackhammer runs at around 100 decibels. Musicians, mechanics, construction workers, and other people who work in loud environments can endanger their hearing, especially if they work in environments with explosives, which can generate sound waves intense enough to cause pain and immediate hearing damage. A decibel meter can indicate when sound has reached the danger zone. The decibel meter measures the sound pressure and provides a reading in decibels for the convenience of the user. Some may also provide readings in other units of measurement, depending on the uses they are intended for. Decibel meters are often designed to be portable so that people can move them around as needed, and are often hand held, although sometimes they can be part of a permanent instrument array which is designed to take continuous measurements in a given area. One application in which a decibel meter can be used is in the reinforcement of municipal codes. Many municipalities bar sounds above a certain decibel level for safety and comfort, and may have restrictions on noise during certain hours. Police officers can carry decibel meters to determine whether or not a sound is violating the noise ordinance. These devices are also used in noise pollution studies which are used to determine the impact of passing vehicles, aircraft, and other sound-generating objects on a community. The decibel meter is also used in the music industry, during recording and setting up for concerns as well as monitoring of conditions in a concert. Similarly, meters may be installed in noisy workplaces to monitor conditions, and may be designed to send out alerts when people need to wear ear protection or take other precautions to protect their hearing. These devices are also utilized in testing of hearing protection such as ear plugs and headphones, with such products coming with a decibel ratings to provide an indicator as to which settings they can and should be used in.

So many offerings for these dB meters are for crap. I wrote the following for the other apps:“Literally when your measurement reads 75 dB on this app, indicating a “potential hazard,” while in a quiet gentle breeze that I can fall asleep to, there is something seriously wrong with this app. It is by far the norm with these free dB meter apps, which leads me to think that access to your phone is the objective and not really to provide you with even a semi-accurate reading. I WOULDNT BOTHER DOWNLOADING IT! 😡”THIS APP, HOWEVER, had the reading at an avg of 45 dB in the gentle breeze. So which one would I rely on more to be somewhat accurate? This one.BTW - using an iPhone 7 & iOS 13.6.1.

I tested this app in a controlled environment and compared it to two other dB meters that I have. I found it to be the most accurate of the three. I know it seems too sensitive to some people but areas in your home are often much more noisy than you think they are. It’s all relative. When you are used to a noisy environment and you go to a less noisy area it may seem quiet, but it isn’t really. What would help is if the response could be dampened a little and I would like a needle display better, but overall this app is quite good.

This app is extremely microphone sensitive. When I opened it the decibel meter was reaching a yellow color near the top, and keep in mind I was laying in bed a 2:12 AM because I couldn’t sleep so it was completely silent in the room. I set my phone down on my bedside table and now the decibel meter was jumping between the 30-40 range. I wasn’t moving at all and couldn’t even hear myself breath. The only noise in the room was my little brother sleeping and breathing kinda loud, but I knew it wasn’t loud enough or close enough to set the meter off as he was like nearly 10 feet away. I don’t like talking bad about things because it usually means less sales for the creator if people decide to listen to this but I mean this app kinda has it coming from how sensitive it was.

I have three sound apps. Two run extremely close the first is a simple monitor in decibels wo the ability to adjust against a standard value. The second is capable of fine tuning and both read wo tuning quite close. This app however, indicated 20+ decibels high than my other apps. That said, it is very consistent suggesting that it just needs the ability to adjust for a standard baseline which the developer does not provide. As such, this app has very limited use outside of comparisons to other known sounds on its unique non-standard scale.The interface is appealing and overall efficiency seems to suggest a quality app. It’s a shame that it isn’t better calibrated when loaded or provide a means for the user to calibrate the app. I would not recommend this app for any pro or pro-am application of value. In its current form it is a toy and not a serious tool.
