draftply
Math Notepad Calculator
Free · In‑App Purchases
draftply is a notepad that does the math. Write calculations the way you would jot them down – with words, units and percentages – and every line shows its result as you type. No formula bar, no lost intermediate results, no starting over.
Flights: 2 * $189
Hotel: 3 * $142
Total: total
WRITE IT LIKE A NOTE
• Label any line and type "total" to add up the block above it.
• Reuse results with variables or line references like @6.
• Percentages work the way you say them: 100 + 19% is 119.
• Edit any number and everything below updates instantly.
• Start a line with # to make a heading, then jump between headings from the toolbar. Search and replace across the whole draft.
NOTE MODE
• Just write: each result appears faintly right behind its own line, with no result column.
• Put a calculation in curly braces in the middle of a sentence, and its result appears right behind it.
• On the Mac, note mode shrinks draftply to a narrow note that stays on top of your other windows. On iPhone and iPad it is the alternative to the compact view – whichever you prefer.
UNITS THAT JUST WORK
• Mix units freely: 1.5 L + 3 dl = 1.8 L, 120 km / 1.5 h = 80 km/h.
• Units cancel out on their own – distance × consumption × price gives you a cost.
• Convert right in the line: 5 km in mi, 20 °C in °F, 90 min in h – or define your own units.
• Calculate with $, € and other currency symbols (no live exchange rates).
MORE IN THE FREE VERSION
• Dates and times: days until a deadline, clock times like 8:12, durations like 3 h 20 min, and sheets that count along with the clock.
• Hex, binary and bit operations for developers.
• Complex numbers, dB and dBm – handy for electronics and amateur radio.
• Maths written as in maths: 2x, sin(30°), cos²(x) – plus rounding, combinatorics, random numbers and CSV import.
DRAFTPLY PRO – WHEN A NOTE NEEDS MORE
• Form view: turn a note into an input mask with fields, dropdowns, results and a live chart.
• Charts: line, bar, scatter, histogram, pie and 3D surfaces – export as SVG, PNG or CSV.
• Quotes: turn line items and a total into a client-ready PDF with your company details or letterhead, with VAT if you need it.
• Algebra and calculus: solve, factor, simplify, differentiate and integrate.
• Lists, statistics and finance: sum, mean, median, NPV, IRR and loan payments.
• Matrices, your own functions, loops and classes.
60+ READY-MADE EXAMPLES
Budgets, loan comparisons, energy costs, recipe scaling, homework checks, antenna lengths and SWR – over 60 examples are built in and work offline. Open one, change the numbers, make it yours.
PRIVATE AND PORTABLE
• Works completely offline. No account, no tracking, no ads.
• Your notes are plain .dply text files you can save, share and open anywhere.
• Light, dark and Nord themes, plus two high-contrast ones. Available in English, German, Spanish, French, Italian and Portuguese.
• On the Mac, drag a file onto the window to open it, or keep any window on top.
ONE PRICE, NO SUBSCRIPTION

Ratings & Reviews
- This app hasn’t received enough ratings or reviews to display an overview.
• Results carry the right unit: pow(3 m, 2) is 9 m², 6 kWh / 4 h is 1.5 kW, 100 km / 70 km/h is a travel time, and lists and matrices with units add across units.
• Percentages stay percentages in variables, text and totals, so after VAT = 19% the line 100 € + VAT is 119 €, 100 + -10% is 90, and 15000 / 200000 in % is 7.5 %.
• Exact arithmetic where it matters: results a rounding step from a whole number count as whole, trigonometry at 30° and 45° and temperatures convert exactly, and nCr, nPr and complex powers are exact.
• Results that cannot be computed, such as tan(90°), ln(0), overflow or values too small, are reported instead of showing infinity, NaN or 0.
• A function name without brackets (sqrt 16), calculations taken for notes, a while or for loop that fails, and unknown units name the likely fix; a failed loop or method call restores the earlier state.
• Comparisons can be chained, 1/2x is 1/(2x), 1/2 kg is half a kilo, and 7 % (-3) is -2 as in spreadsheets.
• Clock times and durations show their seconds, 8:15 + 90 asks for a unit, today + 1.5 adds a day and a half, and dates outside the years 1 to 9999 are reported.
• solve, factor and simplify keep tiny coefficients, calculate systems exactly, follow the sheet's number format and tell apart roots that lie close together.
• Statistics, diff, integrate and finance functions (npv, rate, irr) follow the textbook, keep units and currencies, and report divergent or ambiguous cases; percentile(xs, 90%) is the 90th percentile.
• Offers compute VAT on the printed net amount, round plain amounts to cents, read VatRate = "19%" as typed, and warn about mixed currencies or fractions of a cent; total reports error and list lines.
• Files and drafts are stored with a decimal point and show in your number mode; Windows line endings, a BOM, CSV with decimal commas and forms with commas or brackets in a label open correctly.
• Documents and libraries name the app version in their header app_version, which replaces version and min_app_version; a precision outside 0 to 15 is clamped.
• New units ms, µs, ns, hPa, kPa, MPa and mbar; the µ prefix works for custom units, and in also means inch (1 ft in in is 12 in).
• Error messages appear in the app's language, never show internal text, and plots, csvwrite and hist report the cause of a bad range.
• Editor: a variable named like a unit is underlined with a hint, the parameter hint sits right behind the cursor, @N references follow deleted lines, and to, as, elif, break and continue are coloured.
• Settings are sorted from look to behaviour, closing a window removes its empty draft, a tip shows the progress circle only on the tip you tapped, and in the compact layout a long result wraps instead of being cut off.
• Note mode: a plain input with a comment, like months = 36 // term, no longer repeats its value behind the text.
• Undo no longer reaches into the next sheet after a sheet is deleted, and saving in comma mode leaves decimal commas in notes, comments and headings as typed.
• × and ÷ calculate like * and /, 10 km % 3 is 1 km, sums of quantities stay exact across very different sizes, and min, max and sort take dates and clock times.
• Text lines starting with {{ are text, {name} alone on a line reports an unknown name, @3 in a note stays text, and solve names the mismatch between equations and unknowns.
• The search in the reference lists the places where a word is defined first.
