With its friendly approach and awesome updates, Duolingo’s long been one of our favorite apps for learning another language. Its secret: making the process genuinely fun. Engaging mini-games test your reading, writing, and speaking skills, and joining a club (where you can encourage and compete with others) adds a great social element. Bonus: all those languages and games are available for free!

Much improved over the years

I used Duolingo in my high school years (college grad here), and let me tell you this refresh makes this app so much more engaging, enjoyable, and rewarding. I have only taken the Spanish course, but these should be universal. This design overhaul will pull you in. Every correct answer rewards you with a crisp “ba-ding” and a cute animation with one of the characters cheering you on. When the app reads to you the characters are animated to speak with their own voice. They will also express embarrassment or frustration when you answer incorrectly but right themselves soon after. The types of exercises are a lot more varied now. It will give you multiple choice sentence building, comprehension questions, matching exercises, free sentence building, listening only exercises, reading only exercises, and more. You can excess most thing for free. I am currently using the Super subscription. You can motivate yourself by climbing ranks against other learners. Doing more exercises increases your likelihood of climbing the ranks to try and reach new leagues. So it’s also motivating you to do daily exercises as well as encouraging you to keep the pace up over the weeks. There’s a lot to this app. If you are trying to replace a habitual social media scroll or other mindless time fillers, and you want to learn another language, this is a great way to do both with minimal effort. You can expect a “lesson” to take 4 minutes maximum. I highly recommend it.

ONE OF THE BEST WOULD RECOMMEND, SOME SMALL SUGGESTIONS AND ISSUES

If you are just starting out on a language this is the app. You learn words effectively and it is very good at encouraging to learn. The unfortunate thing was it got very repetitive and takes some time to get through to learn new words. It was very good when I first started learning Norwegian or Norsk Bokmål. I got the basics but really just basics. Duolingo won’t make you fluent but it is a great starting place and language practice tool to have when first encountering a new language. Don’t expect yourself to learn an entire language with Duolingo alone but it is great when wanting to practice the language you are learning or getting a few new words. Once again, it doesn’t feel like you are making super fast progress or you have grown quickly but I always enjoying going on and practicing. Another problem is that I never really understood why something was some way and Duolingo did not really do a good job explaining the reasons behind something so I was left confused. The good thing is these questions can be answered on the forum that Duolingo provides. Also the pronunciation does not appear to be given. All you could do was hear the word but I could never tell if the letter “d” was pronounced at the end of some words or not. I had to learn this outside of Duolingo. To conclude this is SPECTACULAR language learning app and I recommend it for all who want to try a new language.
