Ella is a sight-singing ear-training app that helps you improve your musical ear with fun and engaging exercises.
It uses the microphone to detect your pitch and provide accurate evaluation and feedback. The tuner’s pitch detection helps you to adjust your singing.

Ella gives you a detailed analysis of your performance on intonation and intervals and lets you further visualize it through graphs. The intonation score is based on how accurately you sang the pitch of each note. The interval score is based on how accurately you sang each interval.

The free sight singing app I’ve been looking for
So far, this app rocks. I was out of practice for a long time on my sight singing, but this app is helping me get that skill back! It’s intuitive and the exercises are good. They’re not repetitive either so you don’t have to worry about memorizing the exercises if you use it a lot.
I like that it records you and plays you back instantly, with the piano notes and your pitch on a line graph. Really keeps you honest. Right now I don’t have a voice teacher to give me feedback, so it’s essential that I be able to hear myself.
This app can be useful for any level. I could see it helping a beginner who wants to learn to read music, an intermediate musician tuning their ear, or even an advanced musician who requires dynamic sight reading drills. It helps to be familiar with key signatures and their relative minors, or have a cheat sheet handy.
Sight reading help
Definitely helps with sight reading. I learned music by ear in the formative years of my life using the Yamaha method for piano. I did not start sight reading until I started violin at the age of 12, but I didn’t sight read with the notes in mind, it was more so related to where I put my fingers when in first position. I’ve never been great with singing, but practicing singing the note names as I sight read is very helpful and I’m sure it will translate to playing and sight reading music for other instruments.

Good for training
I’ve been enjoying this so far. However, I have noticed a bug of some sorts when using it.
A few times, I have gotten two stars on a level, and wanted to try again to go for three stars. When I did, I still was getting scores in the 70s and 80s, and yet my accuracy was bugged to stay at 100 and it awarded me the 3 stars anyways. It didn’t really feel earned. I’ve looked into it, and it only seems to happen when I hit “try again”, and leaving the level and coming back seems to reset it back to normal.
Other than that, I have been enjoying the app and plan to use it occasionally to keep my aural skills up outside of school.
