Description
With the “FDA Age Calculator,” retailers can use their personal smartphones to help determine if the purchaser is old enough under federal law to buy tobacco products. Using the camera feature on a smartphone, the app is able to scan the driver’s license of the purchaser to determine if the customer is at least 21 years of age (the federal minimum age to buy a tobacco product). The birthdate listed on the photo id can also be manually entered into the app by the retailer for a quick age calculation. This application is only intended to assist retailers in calculating the age of the purchaser. This application does not check or verify whether an ID is real or authentic. Retailers are responsible for ensuring that they do not sell tobacco products to individuals under 21 years of age. This application does not transmit or share this information or save the information on the user’s device or a third party or government server.

Ratings and Reviews
Mediocre At Best
First few times I tried it, the camera would just close without scanning then ID and would then go back to the main screen. Worked intermittently the next 5 times I tested it.
I see in the settings that you should be able to change the age limit (19+ here in Utah), but it doesn't do anything when you try and click on it. This app is useless to everyone in Utah (and several other states) until you fix that.
Works good but could be so much better
This is a very useful tool and takes the guesswork out of actually inputting the dates which could also potentially lead to an error. It’s very simple and easy to use, but why stop there. Can’t they just show the age of the ID being scanned? It would be useful for alcohol sales as well. If FDA reads these reviews PLEASE consider just showing the age of the ID being scanned.
Not dependable
This works great for basic ID check but the crooks are a step ahead. Used it for a clearly fake ID. The girls name ( no middle name ) was Viana beach. So many things I found wrong just with looking at it but it scanned she was 21. I figured I would check the other fake IDs I had confiscated and they all came up as legit. Kids that I had caught and told them this is a fake ID and apologized and begged me not to call the police the fake ID still scanned ok. Do not depend on this app
