FOLDER RACK – Manage your files and folders
The Finder was always my most-used tool. However, there were many functions that I missed in my day-to-day work or that I would have done differently. That’s how the idea for Folder Rack came about. Here are a few tips for your personal journey of discovery:

– Enter tags directly in the cell

... and in the app you will discover much more! Take a look at “Tutorial as PDF” and “Current Shortcuts as PDF” under “Help”. You can fully test Folder Rack for 7 days. The license is available as an In-App Purchase – no subscription: buy once, save time and gain an overview for life!
more – Preview: Pressing Command + I quickly opens a preview pane, which even allows you to edit and save plain text files directly within the pane – something I use often. You can also choose whether to use a monospaced or a proportional font, and whether lines should wrap at the edge of the panel or whether you can scroll horizontally.
– I’ve never been a fan of all standard keyboard shortcuts for navigation in the text, particularly Home and End, so I’ve changed them. Home jumps to the start of the line, End to the end of the line. Pressing Command + = always centres the current line. Using Option + Page Up and Option + Page Down lets you scroll whilst keeping the current line centred.
– You can find the new additional key bindings under “Help”, “Current keyboard shortcuts as PDF”. Please feel free to give feedback on whether you’d prefer to be able to choose the key shortcuts yourself. There’s surely a spare setting switch somewhere for that ...

– Resolved several issues relating to older versions of macOS. Folder Rack runs on macOS 13.5 Ventura and later. To use the “old” icon, see the first page in “Settings”.

– “Preview”: If the “Calculate size of folders” option in the “View” menu is not selected, a “Calculate size” button will initially appear for directories, so that there is no delay even with large directories.
– As always, various corrections and improvements.
1.25 6d ago
– “Go To”: Display a path from the clipboard in the panel.
– “Panels”: New sample profile “3 x Preview”. Shows how to connect three panels, each with its own preview panel.
– “Preview”: Under “Link to Panel”, there is a new “All” button. This updates a preview panel from all other panels. Ideal when using multiple panels and only one preview panel.
1.24 Apr 10
– Preview: Shift+Command+I toggles the info rows on and off.
– Breadcrumbs can be shown or hidden for the current panel or for all panels. This is particularly useful when “tidying up” in Dispatch mode, when, for space reasons, you only want the breadcrumbs to be displayed in the first panel.
– The menu has been tidied up, with “Panels” added for options affecting multiple panels. This has made the “Panel” menu clearer. There’s also an Easter egg hidden in the menu – especially for those feeling nostalgic these days!
– “Panel” menu: Copy the path of another panel into the current panel using Shift+Command. Very handy if, for example, you have one large panel in one rack and several small ones in a second rack. You can then quickly “enlarge” a small one without completely changing the look.
– The current panel settings can be saved as a profile. Loaded and saved profiles are displayed in the first selection box when you click on them using Control+Command+G or Control+Click.
– Bookmarks and profiles can be saved and reloaded as JSON files in the selection box. This allows you to manually edit bookmarks and profiles in the JSON file.
– “Panels” menu: Three example profiles: “Standard”, “Ivo” (my favourite) and “Tidy up”. Try them out, change paths, columns and other settings in the panels as required, and ideally save them as a profile under “Panels”.

– JSON files are recognised as text and can therefore be edited and saved directly in a preview panel.
– Under “Go To”: Your current bookmarks can be saved to a JSON file (and reloaded). You can edit them, for example, using an external editor or in the preview. This is handy if you want to quickly modify or reorder your bookmarks.
– Under “Help”: “Tutorial as PDF” has been updated.

– New: A dispatch mode that simplifies and speeds up even large-scale tidying-up tasks: Open the source folder (e.g. “Desktop” or “Downloads”; these are the places where files tend to accumulate) alongside a preview panel in one rack, and as many different target folders as you like in one or more additional racks. Example: 2 racks, each with 8 target panels (i.e. 16 in total), have positions 3, 4, ... up to 18. Select files in the source folder and move them very quickly and without additional prompts by pressing the target panel numbers (3, 4, ..., 0 = 10, Shift + 1 = 11, ..., Shift + 0 = 20) to move them quickly and without any additional prompts. Holding down the Option key copies the files. You can see an example in the App Store screenshots. You can, of course, save the layout under a name for future use and load it again and again. Tidying up has never been easier!
– Toolbar: Clicking on the text below the path selection box displays the bookmarks (just like Shift + click).
– “Window” menu, “Enter Position”: Enter position and size manually (I added this for my App Store screenshots).
– “File” menu, “File List as PDF”: Creates a list of the selected (or all) files and folders in the folder, showing name, date and size.
1.21 Mar 27
– Adjustments for macOS 15 Sequoia (incl. option to change app icon)
1.20 Mar 21
– The small confirmation dialogue box can now also be operated using keys (space bar, return key, O for OK and C for Cancel).
– The rename input field should now also be displayed correctly in dark mode.
1.18 Mar 11
– Minor improvements to the preview panel
1.17 Mar 10
– Setup, tab “1: General”: Reactivate old icon with transparent frame and protruding magnifying glass for macOS before macOS 26 Tahoe.
– Setup, tab “6: Sandbox”: Single “security-scoped bookmarks” can be deleted.
– In addition to the existing selection “All of same Type”, there is now “Select All of same Date”: if you do not want to sort by “date” but want to see files of the same age.
1.16 Feb 28
– In the left-hand toolbar selection box, you can now rename the displayed names for paths and bookmarks without physically renaming the folder or file, of course. Since the last path component is used as the name, this helps to distinguish between elements with the same name more easily. And sometimes the default name is simply too long or not very meaningful.
– For Smart Columns, which display the pixel resolution for images, the page number for PDFs and the duration for audio/video files (and can of course also be sorted), there are two new switches in the “View” menu and in the settings:
– To speed up the display of very large directories, metadata reading can now be disabled.
– Since iCloud files may need to be downloaded, this can be disabled separately with another switch. (thanks to Frank!)
1.15 Feb 26
Since I use Folder Rack myself on a daily basis, there are regular minor updates with improvements, bug fixes and the like. Any special news will be posted here. Thank you for using Folder Rack!
1.14 Feb 21
– Small fixes for Dark Mode (Command + 0)
1.12 Feb 12
– Adjustments for macOS 26 Tahoe
– Menu option „View, Show Icon Preview”: Next to the file name, either the (general) file icon or the (file-specific) preview icon can be displayed.
1.11 Feb 11
– The toolbar lists for folders and bookmarks contain a tooltip with the complete path.
– Date columns show relative values such as “today”, “yesterday” etc.
– New “Folder” column: this is particularly useful in panels with search results where the items are not all located in the same folder.
– Web links (URLs) are saved as .webloc files in “Clipboard, Save as File”. When opened, the browser is automatically launched with the URL.
– You can also drag selected text, images, PDFs, and URLs directly from Safari into a panel with the mouse. Depending on the type, a corresponding file is created; for example, a URL results in a .webloc file, and text results in a .txt file.
1.10 09/04/2025
– New, more compact toolbar: if not all buttons are displayed, you can scroll horizontally across the toolbar.
– Press Shift + Command + Return to start a Spotlight search that also searches connected external drives.
– Return searches the current panel, Command + Return starts a Spotlight search in the user directory.
– Spotlight search with wildcard characters ? and * such as *.txt, image*.jpg, or image??.jpg has been improved.

You can manually sort bookmark entries so that they appear in the toolbar list (Shift+click on the combo box) in any order you want—in addition to “Last Used,” “Most Used,” and “Name”. The bookmark list contains a new option for this: “Sort Entries”.
You can also display this bookmark list with your most important folders and files as a separate panel at any time via “Panel, New Panel with Bookmarks”. Bookmark folders can be drop targets, so that folders such as “Downloads” or “Desktop” can also appear in the list and be filled with elements from other panels.
Folders and files are bookmarked using Command+B, the toolbar button, or the menu option “File, Add Bookmark”. In lists, they are displayed in blue and bold font.
1.7 08/27/2025
– Menu “Columns”: Reset columns in table and tree views to default values.
– Menu “Panels”: “New panel” for folder, selection, clipboard, bookmarks.
– Folders in results lists can be target of drag & drop actions.
1.6 08/26/2025
The “Panel” menu has three new options that help you navigate the file jungle:
– New panel with folder: Works for both folders and files. For files, the contents of the folder in which the file is located are displayed in the new panel.
– New panel with selection: The selected folders/files are displayed together in the new panel. This quickly shows selected files in a clear list.
– New panel with bookmarks: All folders/files that have been bookmarked (Command+B) are displayed in the new panel. Ideal for frequently used folders/files, especially if they are spread across the entire hard drive.
With all three options, the folders/files are accessible together in the new panel (regardless of where they are physically located) and can be clearly edited and sorted in the new panel. The three options are also located in the (default) context menu.
– The PDF with the current keyboard shortcuts, which can be generated under “Help” now also lists the keys for table/tree controls – expanding and collapsing the tree view works wonderfully with the keyboard.
1.5 08/24/2025
– Drag & drop (internal and external) now also available for the “breadcrumb” path control. But a simple click is also useful!
– Two small helpful buttons at the bottom right – if you don’t want to remember the keyboard shortcuts.
1.4 08/23/2025
– The Backspace key takes you to the parent directory (like Command+Up Arrow, etc.).
– Drag & Drop now also works correctly outside of Folder Rack, e.g., from the Finder or into a Mail window.
– The font size and preview font of a text file (system or monospaced font) are now saved with the panels and reloaded.
– The app window can be collapsed and expanded (see “Window” menu). Particularly useful if Folder Rack is always displayed in the foreground, but you need the space for a moment.
1.3 08/22/2025
– Preview: Pressing Command + I quickly opens a preview pane, which even allows you to edit and save plain text files directly within the pane – something I use often. You can also choose whether to use a monospaced or a proportional font, and whether lines should wrap at the edge of the panel or whether you can scroll horizontally.
