FrameMath: Timecode Tools
Frames, Speed & Video Math
Free · In‑App Purchases
Add and subtract timecode, convert frames, plan slow motion, size a card and check frame-rate drift. Exact rational frame rates. Correct SMPTE drop frame. Works offline.
FrameMath is a precise calculator for the timecode, frame-rate and storage maths that comes up every day in production and post.
It does a small number of things and it gets them right.
TIMECODE CALCULATOR
Add and subtract timecode, or measure the duration between two timecodes, at 23.976, 24, 25, 29.97, 30, 50, 59.94 and 60 fps. Negative results are shown as negative, not wrapped. Durations can count the end frame or not, because a shot list and an NLE disagree about that.
FRAMES AND TIMECODE
Convert in both directions, and see the same duration expressed on every other frame rate at once - the table you would otherwise work out by hand.
SPEED AND SLOW MOTION
Work out playback speed from capture and timeline rates, the capture rate you need to hit a target speed, or how long a clip becomes once conformed. 120 fps on a 24 fps timeline is 20% - five times slow motion.
STORAGE
File size from bitrate and duration, or record time from bitrate and card size. Decimal units by default, matching what is printed on the card. Binary units are available and always labelled MiB, GiB and TiB, so the two are never mixed.
FRAME-RATE DRIFT
How much runtime changes when material is played at another rate - the PAL speed-up, NTSC pull-up and pull-down. A 100-minute programme at 24 fps runs 96 minutes at 25 fps. FrameMath tells you the new runtime, the exact speed change and the accumulated drift.
BUILT TO BE TRUSTED
Frame rates are stored as exact ratios, not decimals. 23.976 is 24000/1001 and is never treated as 24 - they label timecode the same way but they are different lengths of time, which is the whole reason the drift tool exists.
Drop frame is implemented as real SMPTE arithmetic, not string substitution. Frame numbers are skipped at every minute except every tenth minute; no picture is dropped. Impossible drop-frame timecodes are rejected with an explanation rather than silently corrected.
The calculation engine is verified frame by frame against an independent implementation across a full 24-hour day at every supported rate.
ONE APP, THREE PLATFORMS
A single purchase covers iPhone, iPad and Mac. The Mac version is a real Mac app with a sidebar, resizable window and keyboard shortcuts - not a stretched phone screen.
PRIVATE BY DEFAULT
No account. No tracking. No analytics. No data collection of any kind. FrameMath works entirely offline; the only network request it ever makes is the purchase itself, handled by Apple.
FRAMEMATH PRO
The timecode calculator, frames converter, duration calculator and speed calculator are free, with no limits and no ads.
One optional lifetime purchase unlocks drop-frame timecode, the storage calculator, the frame-rate drift calculator, saved presets and calculation history - on all three platforms.
