Description

FreeCBT is an open source thought diary for Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT).

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is the "gold standard" of psychotherapy and is widely considered to be one of the most effective, evidence backed treatments for depression, anxiety, and panic. If you go into just about any therapist or psychiatrist, CBT will likely be one of the first treatments they try.

FreeCBT is a companion and self-help app for one of the most common formats of CBT. You may have heard it called "the three column technique" or "catch it, check it, change it." Your brain is really good at making you feel exactly what you're thinking. Often, we find ourselves thinking "automatic negative thoughts" that lead us to fume on something that may not be true. That can cause us to feel depressed or anxious.

CBT helps you record "automatic thoughts," challenge them with cognitive distortions and then train your brain with an alternative thought. If you do it enough, you can change your thoughts, your moods and your behavior.

FreeCBT, a fork of Quirk, is open source under the GPL. You can find the code on Github at: https://github.com/erosson/freecbt

The Developer is an Angel

Or a bodhisattva. And a great example of selfless service. I don’t know how ungrateful people could give this app less than five stars. I’m new to CBT and this was exactly what I needed. A simple and easy way to track my negative thoughts and reprogram them. No subscriptions. No annoying content. Thank you so much for making this app.

Technical Adjustment Needed

I just downloaded the app, and in using it I found it some aspects of it don’t work very well on my iPhone. There are a few screens where it seems like I should be able to swipe left or right to get to the next option but I can’t. Also, while typing a response I cannot say the words that I’m typing. In other words the keyboard covers the answer area. This is a pet peeve of mine so it lost a star on that. For an app designed to help me think about my thinking process, I would rather I didn’t have to think about the technical side of it while I was using it. Love the concept of the app. Just needs some adjustment for Apple users.

All good but for one thing

I love how easy it is to use this app. It’s easy to understand. It’s easy to use. However, the examples given for the fourth and final step in the introduction isn’t enough for me. I need a couple more wide ranging examples to truly understand how to phrase the fourth step. But I guess that’s what Google is for. Honestly, it could just be me. I’m a little slow with all these meds in my system. Haha.
