Most harmonica tab you'll find online assumes 1st position — and 1st position is genuinely great: easy, melodic, and satisfying. But it only works if you happen to own the right key harp. Real versatility, and the soulful bent draw notes that make the harmonica sound like a harmonica, live in 2nd position (cross harp), 3rd position (slant harp), and there are others! Most advanced players actually prefer those positions — more draw notes, more bends, more expression. HarpPilot is built to get you there.
HARMONICA POSITIONS, MADE VISUAL
Pick the harp in your hand and the position you want to play in — HarpPilot shows you exactly which holes to blow and draw, across Major, Minor, both Pentatonics, Harmonic Minor, Dorian, Mixolydian, and Blues Minor scales, plus the arpeggios built on top. Flip the view around and go the other way: tell it the key a song is in, and it'll show you every harp/position combination that plays it. Switching between positions on the same scale is one of the fastest ways to actually feel how each position works, instead of just reading about it.
TRANSPOSE ANY TAB TO ANY KEY
Paste tabs from anywhere into your personal library, then transpose them to any harp, any position, and shift them by octave — instantly. Play a tab written for 1st position and hear exactly how it lands in 2nd or 3rd position. It's a genuinely fun way to build a mental model of how positions relate to each other.
FIND THE RIGHT HARP FOR ANY SONG
Sitting in with a band or playing along to a recording? Tap Find Song Key and let HarpPilot listen for a few seconds. It identifies the song's key and tells you which harp and position will work best — including the relative major/minor, since that's often a genuinely different (and equally valid) way to play the same tune. Choose a Style — Blues, Rock/Pop, Folk/Country, Jazz/Classical, or Beginner — and it tailors its suggestions to how that genre actually uses positions.
PLAY ALONG WITH REAL-TIME PITCH TRACKING
HarpPilot listens through your microphone as you play and tracks your position through the tab in real time, so you can practice hands-free.
WHY POSITIONS MATTER
First position is easy because it's all blow notes and simple draws. But 2nd and 3rd position unlock the draw bends — the wailing, vocal-like notes that define blues and folk harmonica — and let you play with any band regardless of what key they're in. Learning to move between positions isn't just a technical exercise; it's how you go from "I can play songs that happen to fit my harp" to "I can play in any key with any harp I own."
Free to start, with up to 5 saved tabs. HarpPilot Pro unlocks unlimited tabs and lets you personalize suggestions to the harps you actually own.
